  • the incredible low beam bulb munching Scout

    Hey Guys
I have had to change the drivers side low beam 3 times in the last 5 months and the passengers side just blew(2012 Scout 6 speed manual). It is always on cranking the engine (The bulb fail indicator will come on once engine is running).
The bulbs are Narva 55w jobs and I do use them for daylight running.
Suffice to say I dont contaminate the bulbs when handling them and the connectors dont seem to have corrosion.
    Has anybody got any ideas?
I have googled this and it seems it happens to a number of skodas/audis but havent seen one solution
    Cheers
    Nick

      Are the bulbs actually failing?

If there's a high resistance in the circuit, the central electrics module won't send current to the bulb if it's outside parameters.

Check the terminals in the plug that they're providing a tight connection.

I used to blow stop and tail lights on my A4 about every 6 months. But only ever blew a single low beam once in 15+ years of VAG ownership.

As Umai said, check the resistance and voltage at the globe. If you dont have the equipment, and auto electrician can do it for you.

Aftermarket kit never lasts as long, but you'd think the usage rate is still a little high. Worth a check over under warranty.

could be a CECM problem. id let the dealer work it out, failing that, check out briskoda because if its happened to you, it will have happened there before

I've had 2 go in 4 years in the Octavia, I'm not sure if that is unusual? We do drive a lot with them on during the day. Thank the Skoda gods the light housings are so to remove compared to other cars!

I spoke with my dealer and they have no idea as to what might be the problem. He is ordering original skoda bulbs. I think the problem is some kind of voltage fluctuation when the engine cranks. I leave the light switch to On at all times so when i turn the key the lights come on and then when the engine cranks they dim and then they get the full voltage once again. The bulbs always blow after a start up.
I have searched the froums and as I said there are instances on Briskoda of this but no answers.
I will book it in with them and get it checked but I see no point to just measuring no load voltage at the bulb socket. Could someone expand on what CECM might mean (some kind of module I figure).
For now I am getting into the habit of turning the light switch off these days.
For the record the filaments are blowing.. I think I was asked that by one of the posters here
                  Thanks for your help

                    Central Electrics Control Module.

Odd that the filaments are blowing.
