    Yep - fully agree
ET35 does create more poke, it avoids a wider rim hitting the shock
but also have to take into account wheel width changes

For our Octavia, the largest good option is 8"
You can go to 8.5" if you are prepared to tolerate poke and handling issues
(If you lower the car you will need to roll the guard for 8.5" rims)

Using 7.5" and ET51 as a starting point
8" ET45 is same inner clearance and 12mm poke which is just ok
    8.5" ET35 is 3mm more inner clearance and 29mm poke - YIKES!
8.5" ET45 is 7mm less inner clearance (will be close) and 19mm poke

    A photos of 8" ET45

A photo of 225 Michelin PS3 on an 8" rim
(While you can put 225 on an 8.5" rim, it would be a bit of a stretch)

Interesting Brad, many people would not notice, but not much gets past you..
I drive fairly enthusiastically and also do track days, I want it to feel real good

It does not take into account rim width changes, just the tyre
    Perfect for choosing alternate tyres
(not sure why he has the offset in there)
But need more calculations when changing rims

Nah, anyone would notice if they were half interested. I'm the first to admit that I'm pretty ham-fisted when driving & tend to muscle cars more than finesse them through corners. My favourite car ever was the wife's rep-spec XF Falcon. You just grabbed it by the scruff of the neck and smacked it into corners.

i just treat it as if the rim is the tyre or they are an assembly. You soon get your head around it, it just requires a few extra changes of data to get the whole picture.

Is this off your car? The other photo of your car above doesn't appear to show this rim/tyre wall offset? The tyre wall in your pic above (whole car pic) looks to be over the rim? Are you running 235s or something?

Those tyres are on the rear and look like that - the rears are a bit too far away to see clearly in the photo

The front now has these Goodyear F1 Asymmetric

My main point is that just because you can squeeze a tyre onto any given rim does mean it's a really good idea
I think 235+ are better for 8.5 - but between the rim and wider rubber you've have issues (even more if lowered)

I had my front wheels off today
(checking brake pads for the VW SuperSprint next Sat)

The clearance between my rim and the shock is ~12mm
            Loosing 7mm sounds possible
I just don't know how much tyre deflection happens at the top
I think you need to be pretty determined (or don't care) to put a 8.5" rim in there

At lease with an 8.5" ET45 you could use a 2mm~3mm spacer to get away from the shock
Still gives a lot of poke however

You'd probably get away with 5mm on a 225/40r18 - esp if it's a small carcass tyre like the Michelin appears to be or it has a particularly stiff sidewall like an RE050A.

The Goodyear seems to have a more pronounced rim protector than the Michelin.

If it's just the stance that is trying to be achieved I think I'd rather an 8" and play around with the offset & tyre size

Just ordered a ambition plus wagon in brilliant silver, I don't particular like the stock alloys... Any recommendation on what brand / or particular wheel model? I am thinking gunmetal or dark grey in colour and reuse the stock tires. And hoping no more than $250 per wheel. Cheers!

Ambition plus is either 16" or 17" wheels AFAIK.

Good price for your rims. GLWS

                    Any idea what they weigh?

For $250 a wheel there won't be any brands to be looking at - mainly cheap reps. I'd be inclined to look around for some Skoda or VW OEM wheels that someone else is selling, if VW pretty sure the Skoda centre caps are the same size.

The Golus would look good and are very sharply priced. A bit over your budget but maybe pick up a cheap set of the Goodyears from Croydon in 225/40, then look to sell off your existing 17s as a package to someone who wants to upgrade to basic alloys.

Could always coat those wheels anthracite as well, could look quite good.

Ha yeah I figured, just meant once the cost of new tyres was added in if the move to 18 was made.

Say $500 for your wheels, $800 for tyres.. http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...ml#post1056842 , surely brand new tyres and 17 inch alloys have to net $300 to bring it back to $1000 or $250/corner.
