Nice wheel design (I guess all VMRs are in their own way).

The issue is their 'smallest' size is listed at 18 x 8.5, ET45 - this is going to poke 19mm more than the standard RS wheels. On a Golf that would be well outside the guards and illegal. I'm guessing its similar with the Octavia although it depends on whether you're going to play with suspension, guards and/or worried about running something that isn't legal.

Having said that LucasR managed to get a set of VMRs for his GTI build in a x 8, ET50 which is not listed on their site so perhaps other models also come in this size.

If not there are alternatives, happy to cover off on them if desired.

This site says they come in a 35 offset also?

I'd be looking for something between OEM 18 x 7.5, ET51 to 18 x 8, ET45. Anything at these spec levels will be legal and not create any rub issues etc Going to 35 offset will definitely push you into illegal territory by adding another 10mm poke - I'm assuming this is more geared to the Scirroco, Tiguan and IIRC Audis which tend to run lower offsets than Golf/Octavia.

I believe Martin's Octavia runs the Enkei Raijins which are 18 x 8, ET45 with no problems at all - with the added bonus that the Enkeis are fairly light weight and have a good reputation.

On the Mk7 thread Guy has suggested that up to x 8.5, ET50 will work on Golfs which is a couple mm more than the x 8, ET45. I am assuming here that there isn't a material difference in wheel arch clearance between the Golfs and Octavia's but I'd stress to check this directly yourself to make sure (the Raijins for example poke 12mm more than stock so see how that sits visually).

I'm pretty sure there are Octavia's running x 8.5 ET45 whether they be VMRs or other - I don't know whether they're happy running a little outside the guards or they've done something else to make it work better. Modified Octavia owners please feel free to chip in!

Not sure if you're aware, but 225/40R18's (stock tyres on 18" Skodas) are more expensive to purchase than 235/18R18's (the size wider, fits 18x8") so if you do a lot of k's like I do, the 18x8's will be cheaper in the long run.

For those of you that have added some new rims to your RS could you please advise if 18*8.5 ET45s would work on a stock RS wagon? By work I mean remain legal and not rub? Supplier reckons the rears would be fine and the fronts would poke out by about 5mm? They didn't say whether they'd rub or not?

Apologies for stepping in again, but per our PMs I'd still be mildly surprised that the rears would fit without any work - but I say that from a Mk6 Golf point of view where that distributor claims they fit and they don't. However if they're admitting 5mm poke on the front then that's game over, that's not legal. Just depends on whether that bothers you or not.

There's definitely some RS guys running x 8.5 wide so would love to hear from them - whether it's more clearance on Octavia, higher offset or suspension/guard work.

I have had a quote for 1 stock 18" alaris rim at $660.....plus tire! Sucks as I wanted to buy a full sized spare but at 900 roughly.......no way. This is for a new octavia.....

this is x8 ET35 on an Elegance hatch (ie: 15mm higher than an RS). The rears fit fine but the fronts had about 6mm of poke (but no rub)

x8.5 ET45 will be 16mm more inwards & 4mm less outwards than x8 ET35.

Stock RS is x8 ET50 isn't it? If so you'll be +11mm on the oustide & +1mm on the inside

The Neptunes are x 7.5 and ET51 (identical to Detroits) so the poke ends up at 19mm. Definitely an issue on Golfs without work, and Martin also confirmed it was an issue on Octavia (without work) - which is why he stuck to x 8 at ET45 with the Enkeis.

After lengthy discussions with Dutch (thanks mate) and confirmed by Martin, I'm back to looking for 18*8 ET45-50, which for the style of rim and price I'm looking at, options are severely limited in this country at present by the looks of it.

Many of the Golf guys go to ET35 and that's what addresses the poke
I'm pretty sure there would be less than 5mm clearance between the tyre and the shock
I expect ET35 to change the steering feel and feedback and bump steer (but everybody lives with it)

Sorry, I keep forgetting that they went 7.5 with the FL. Pre-FL were 18x8 ET50

They were BBS I picked up for $400. They were very light (about the same as the OEM 16x6.5) and cheap but I took an instant dislike to them because the seller hadn't been honest about the condition of them and there were a few minor scratches. kicking myself now because each set of wheels/tyres I've gone to since have been heavier & heavier. One day I'll get back near 15kg.

AFAIK, ET35 has more outwards poke than ET45? I'm relying on memory regarding the actual distance. Maybe it was more than 6mm?
Either way, 8" ET35 is no worse on back clearance than 6.5" ET50. I was looking at another set of BBS recently & seriously thinking of getting 10mm taken off the hub flange thingy to make them ET45. They would have been perfect.

And you are totally right about steering feel, feedback & bump steer. x8 ET35 felt slightly odd. I probably could have dialed a bit out with a decent wheel alignment but it still wouldn't have been ideal.
