  • RS Cruise Control Cutting Out

    Hi,

I have a 2012 Manual TSI vRs Wagon. Was towing my jetski yesterday and had cruise control on coming home. On very steep hill the cruise control would just cut out/switch off. I've read on some of the other forums that there appears to be issues with the cruise control stick contacts, but I've also read this is more so for the older models and the newer models have a different stick hence it shouldn't be the contacts?

Anyone got any ideas/suggestions as to why this might be happening? As I said it only happened on the steepest of hills.

Still under warranty so I suppose I could take it to my stealer to get them to look at it, but I'm pretty certain they won't be able to replicate it given it won't be towing the jetski/under heavy load and hence they'll just say "oh sorry we couldn't find any faults with it", which is what they said when I took it back to them at my first service with a few issues I was having (unrelated to this cruise control one).

Wouldn't be a failsafe to stop it lugging in too high a gear?

Hmmmm, maybe, but once the cruise control cut out, I didn't have to change down to 5th gear to have to get it to maintain speed going up the hill and towing the jetski (ie easily remained in 6th gear), so it seems strange that the computer would failsafe cut out at that point?

On the highway heading north just out of Wollongong, there's a very large hill called Mount Ousley. The speed limit is 80 which means 1.5k RPM in 6th gear for the TDI. Boost starts building properly at 1.5k.
Cruise control holds 79-81km/h the whole way up, hitting 24PSI at one point (near the bottom), max boost for 1.5k rpm is around 28PSI - yes I have a boost gauge

Don't think it would be cutting out because of that... Maybe get it checked out?
Yes, mine is stage 2 tune but the tune doesn't affect throttle control in CC does it? Only engine fuel/air maps...

While on this subject, I was driving my '08 RS recently in the rain on the Monash Fwy, and I hit a patch of water and aqua-planed. I'd had the cruise control on, and noticed straight after that the cruise control had de-activated. I wondered if they are designed to de-activate if the wheels lose traction??

Mine just flashes the TC light and floors it back to cruising speed (even from huge puddles on the highway where I've gone down to 60-70km/h)

Update - I towed the camper trailer from Sydney to Brisbane and back last weekend-and-a-bit on cruise control. I noticed it hit 31psi boost (highest I've seen is 2 when pulling up a hill in 5th doing 95 (2,050rpm or so) and cruise stayed on.

Sorry to say, definitely your car.
