  • Strange noise from my 09 RS

    Hi all,

I've been lurking for a while and haven't posted much but would like some advice/thoughts on a strange noise coming from my RS. Almost every time I reverse out of my driveway when the car is cold I hear a noise that kind of sounds like the noise you get after washing a car and the brakes have bound up a bit. It is a bit a of a dragging noise. From outside the car it sounds a bit different, almost like a resonance or rapid vibration. It has become more frequent and I have heard it occasionally when taking off after pulling out on my drive. I am a bit concerned. Oh and it is a manual.

    Cheers

Is it related to speed or engine revs?

Could it be the hand brake dragging on the disk?

What are your pads like? How much wear?

When you go in reverse the HVAC goes into recirculate mode - not the change in noise from that?

Mine does the same thing, the pads are floating and even though the caliper has retracted when you ve released the brake, the pads are still hard against the disc until you start moving.

Thanks for that, I might try parking without the handbrake on and see if it does it again.

probably need to re-grease the sliders of your rear pads. copper grease. do the fronts while youre at it.

If you're lubing caliper parts, this is the stuff to use - CRC Sta-Lube caliper grease.

It's a bit hard to find though. Repco, AutoBarn etc don't seem to carry it. I got a tube of it a few years ago from a small auto parts shop that carried a bunch of oddball stuff. I don't recall the shop's name, but they're in the complex opposite the Ford dealer on Victoria Ave in Castle Hill.

yeah that's not what you use on the slider. that stuff is for the caliper slider pins.

I should have specified the brake pad slider, this thing:

I haven't got them on either my GTI or Elegance brakes. Anti-rattle is controlled by the spring on the outside of the caliper.

The theory is the same though & I agree, copper grease is best (any non-melty grease at a pinch - I used black Molybdenum grease because I'd run out of KopprKote).

Wire brush all the parts where metal touches metal & apply a thin smear (really thin!) on all those parts where the pad touches the caliper or the machined surfaces on the caliper carrier.

KopprKote or Moly is also fine for the slider.

so your pads sit in the carrier directly?

weird, im fairly certain mine have a slider.

anyway, yes copper grease. and cleaning it up before application is a MUST

Yep, I was surprised. When I painted the GTI carriers I figured the tinwear was missing as many lazy/dodgy mechs leave it out. When I pulled apart the never been touched OEM it was exactly the same. Nothing in the carrier, nothing between the pads & the caliper/piston - just a slight rubber-like coating on the back of the pad.

                        wow, I had no idea!

the shim on the back of the pad is to stop vibrations. I guess it works haha

Sounds like the exact same issue I had with my MY11 Manual RS. In the mornings, when cold and as the clutch was just engaging / loaded you would get that exact sound. Happened for the first one or two take-offs each morning. Ended up being an issue with the dual mass flywheel and the entire clutch assembly was replaced under warranty.

Not ideal, as the car is out of warranty. Any info on how serious the issue is? Is it something that might 'let go' at some point?

                            Cheers

I was driving it around for a good 9 months. Noise didn't get anyworse and clutch seemed to engage normally. Just mentioned it when I dropped it off the last service where it was diagnosed and fixed under warranty.
