Just had the timing chain tensioner replaced on my MY10 vRS at Canberra VW ,Kiama. Cant recommend Peter enough. Great service and fantastic price. If you re on the South Coast , this should be your first stop for servicing. Its also interesting to see all his VAG projects in the workshop.

Cost about AU$300 delivered and just under $500 fitted. Worth it for the peace of mind considering the no. of failures and the rattle I was getting on cold start up.

New tensioner came out in 2011, don't know exactly when. The new one has a spring and a ratchet to hold the tension, rather than just a ratchet device. Car is now much quieter on cold start up.

I did some reading today on Briskoda et al and there has been some records of 2012 models failing. But I guess with anything mechanical there's always a risk it will fail.
Antiplastix did they change the chain itself as well?
The pricing you've gotten is much better than I've come up with so far. Skoda Richmond quoted $1300 to replace the tensioner and the chain (he said if you replace the tensioner you should replace the chain at the same time). And Euroclass in Richmond quoted $1500! I didn't ask what the breakdown of parts and labour is but Euroclass seemed to think it's a fairly involved job. Also the shipping estimate from HS Tuning for the kit is coming to about $140 for me so I can't even get the parts pricing to match yours!
Can anyone in Melbourne recommend somewhere reasonably close to the Fairfield/Fitzroy North area to get this done? I only picked up my new car on Saturday and as it's a 2010 build out of warranty and I'm pretty keen to get this done ASAP.
You really need to know where to draw the line on that sort of job. If you do the tensioner, do you do the chain, if you do that, do you do the sprockets and seals too?
If it were a low mileage engine, I'd just do the tensioner.
Morbo if you come to Canberra you're in the wrong place.. Not sure why its called Canberra VW because Kiama is over 2 hours away!!
