i wanted to post up a thread and find out peoples opinions on air intake.

i've got my car booked in for an APR tune this week and will be going for an exhaust as soon as i can find one that is not a 3k APR bolt on kit.
one of the other upgrades that ive looked at is the air intake.
there is a hundred out there and they all say they are the best and offer wonderful things.

a simple filter change from stock to something like k&n is something ive done to cars in the past and is cheap. i didnt notice any difference and have a tendency to get rid of cars every 3 years so never saw the long term benifits.

ive looked and see that people can buy cold air intakes or CAI.
they are expensive, look cool and everyone has different ideas about them.

i wanted to know what skoda owners think, what have you done to your'se and was it worth the outlay.

for me, my car is a daily drive and so far as performance mods i wont be going to far past the chip and exhaust.

    i have a 2010 rs wagon

APR works well, have had it on for at least 70,000km. Zero issues.

        Re: Air

        Check out this guys

My home-made ram-air intake (work in progress)

Im thinking of doing something similar with the k&n panel filter I got plus an extra green filter I got in error. All that space for air to pass through. Also see my comments about a custom scoop going over the radiator

Mystically. The apr filter looks just like a carbon fibre re-make of the stock filter box and new filter.
          Did you notice any difference?

A bit of difference in turbo spin up time; a buttload of difference in induction noise... Although, thats the main reason I got it.

I'll have more to say about specific performance after I get a remap!
But it does the job, and does it well.

get rid of the stock airbox and get something that smooths out the airflow. youll lose a little low rpm torque, but the mid-range is opened up. a tune will only improve it

out of curiosity, is this something that holds true of all engines?

When replacing the airbox with an aftermarket, or in my case a DIY airbox, how do you go about replacing the maf tunnel, and the part after the maf with the two metal clips?

Can that section alone be bought somewhere? As I don't want to hack it out of the stock box, I would rather keep it together to put back on when I sell the car

pretty much. all factory engines are restricted for emissions and sound blah blah so the masses will buy it

Golf Mk5 and Golf R use the TFSI engine so best place would be to check out those sections for ideas. Unfortunately my TSI has a slightly different intake

If you intend selling the car after a few years any butchering of the engine bay will affect resale big time. How about a K&N filer in the standard box?

for similar money to the apr intake you can get one of these. are they worth it?

Man, that's a total rip off (and illegal - can't have an open filter, it has to be in a box)

If you want a CAI and are prepared to spend that sort of money get the APR one, at least you get pretty carbon

I don't believe you will realise any tangible performance gains with a CAI
Car air boxes are designed to reduce intake noise while still flowing air very well
(The air intake and filter have very little to do with emissions issues)

See my sig - I have the APR CAI and the stage II carbon intake tube
                              Benefits are limited to:
                              • Makes the engine bay look cool
                              • Cool intake noises
                              • Never have to replace the air filter but I do have to clean the K&N filter from time to time

After not replacing the air filter 25 times/years the CAI will start saving me money
