  • OIL top up for Petrol MY12 OCTY 118TSI

    Hi Everyone,

I finally reached 8000K on my MY12 Octy 118TSI DSG - and my OIL lamp went on, I do understand this is normal for VW card to drink OIL at first but find it very confusing to choose which to use to top up:

Called Skoda and they told me they recommend any Castrol 5w-30 synthetic. Reading online I found many discussions about this issue and in some places they mention:

    Petrol to use: 5w-30 504/507
    Diesel to use: 5w-30 502/505

Speaking to Skoda Dealership they told me they use Castrol EDGE for both Petrol and Diesel cars and both types are perfectly fine.

Reviewing the Maintenance guide I can see 504/507 is backward compatible but is 5w-30 502/505 ok to fill up, I have a brand new 5 ltr bottle.

Can anyone assist shedding some light and let me know what should I top up with?
    Thanks,

    Thanks,
FSI and TSI engines can use any oil that has been approved to any of these three VW oil specifications:

    "502.00/505.00" or "502.00/505.00/505.01" or "504.00/507.00"

There is nothing in the technical literature which states you must use a particular brand or viscosity grade for your engine.

This product can be used for all FSI, TSI or TDI engines, even though that particular product is not available in Australia.

Only VE TDI engines or earlier can use 505.00

PD TDI and CR TDI engines must use 505.01 (without DPF) or 507.00 (with or without DPF).

True, as TSI engines can use either 502.00 or 504.00

I use Castrol Edge 5W-30 a3/a4 fully synthetic for small top ups for my Jetta TSI 147. Vw service centre said as long as it was a fully synthetic 5w-30 it would be ok.

I called past Richmond a few months ago and they gave me the Castrol EDGE pamphlet but they also said that if I was in the area I could call in and they would top it up free.

There has been numerous threads on this subject and there is a list of APPROVED oils posted in the FUELS AND LUBRICANTS FORUM

Stick to one listed in there and you cant go wrong.

Use an unapproved oil and hold your breath if you have an engine problem as VW have been known to do oil tests to try to get out of warranty repairs.

I use Penrite Enviro + 504/507 in both cars. Repco have a 30% discount for Auto club members this weekend which would make this oil well under $70. List price is $92 for 5L

The dealer offered me to come in and have it topped up but it's on the other side of the city, I Ended up using my Castrol 5w-30 a3/b4 I had at home as car is still under warranty I will only top up the dealership recommendation.

If anyone is in NSW I can see gumtree for sale for $69

For an oil to be approved, it must get official approval from VAG to say it is approved. Not just some oil manufacturer saying it is comparable. Penrite Enviro will show the official letter form VAG

For nearly 100 Years, Penrite has served the lubricant market in Australia with products such as engine oils, automatic transmission fluids, gear & differential oils, coolants, greases, heavy-duty engine, hydraulic & industrial oils, farm and construction products

I have a soft spot for Penrite as they are Australian but If I cant get it, I will always look for the approval on the oil itself.

It's 502.00/505.00 which means it's approved for fixed service regime 15,000km / 12 months. I've used it several times doing interim services so it only ever stays in my car for 7500km but there's no reason it can't be there for 15k.

Keep in mind that a 504/507 oil is "better" and used for variable service regime (not practiced in Australia) for periods of up to 30,000km/2years. A few years back there was 100% price difference but now the difference is minimal so unless you have a stock of oil on the shelf you want to use up (I did), you may as well use 504/507.

The Castrol documentation is all over the place
In some places Edge 5W-30 is listed as meeting the SL and VW 502/505 ratings,
in other places it's listed as meeting the SN and VW 504/507 ratings
It is not a low SAPS oil - so not the best choice

We are meant to use oils that meet the 504/507 rating

Just check the physical bottle for 502 or 504 approval. I just grab Penrite's 504 approved one, it's only a couple a dollars more than the 502 version.
