  • Error Code P0171 - System Too Lean (Bank 1)

Anyone gotten this code in the past? I've just returned from a long trip (600-700kms round trip). Noticed a few symptoms when I came back (everyday driving), like surging (between 2000-3000rpms), for some reason there is a bit more 'grunt' in power when accelerating hard, engine warning light came (which prompted me to do a scan)

I've read up a bit but just wanted to know if anyone got this code and if they fixed it themselves. I'm guessing it might be a couple of things.

    - I've replaced the factory filter with a K&N - which might be oil on the MAF
    - Might be a vacuum hose lose or is leaking and needs replacing
    - Possibly a faulty MAF sensor (car is on 177,000kms now)

Questions I have also (if anyone would be able to answer them) is what would happen if I ran lean for a little while? what are the side effects or what damage would happen to the engine? I'm gonna take it to the mechanic next week.

What's your scanner, VCDS or something else?

With VCDS you could look at the fuel trims with measuring blocks and see if it's correcting for something.

I use an iPhone app called Dash Command. I bought a wi-fi OBD connection to be able to use the app. Not bad and gives be basic diagnostics. As for what you've mentioned I don't think the app is that advanced.

If it will clear codes, I'd do that but don't be stunned if it comes back. I had the same error on my Polo a while ago but that has stayed away.

If/when it reappears, scan with VCDS and look at MB 032 fuel trims. Google fuel trims to understand what you are looking at first.

could it also be overboost? Maybe a problem with the wastegate actuator?
