  • So my new interior arrived by courier today...

Through some miracle I have lucked upon this almost complete factory interior slip in the MY12 update black with red stitching on Ebay for a steal.

The obvious plan was to update my old style black/grey upholstery with this but I will be minus the shift gater, steering wheel stitching and leather door inserts but none of that worries me at all - I just want to get rid of that damn grey crap!

Now, the only problem is fitting it. Any hints, tips or offers to purchase if I decide its too big a job.

This is everything that arrived this morning. all brand new too!

The black looks fantastic... but I think the white does too.

What did you pay for it?? That must have been a fantastic find!

Yes it was a massive steal - a grand total of $31. Yes I didn't leave a 0 off that. It cost me more for the courier to get it here. let's call it $69 all up.

As for easy - not on your life! Took the back right seat base out to have a look and after nearly an hour I wasn't even half way through getting the cover off. There are literally over 100 little wire rings that either need to be cut (easy) or pulled away (hard). The worst bit is the rings that underline the seams where the leather meets the mesh and alcantara. They are set very deep and attached to a wire frame. My brother in law is an upholsterer and I am sure he will make short work of it and know all the short cuts. Might pay him in alcohol to help me finish it.

I have since found out that these rings are called hog rings and are generally just cut off and new ones put on with hog ring pliers that are available on the net for around $30 - but... That's nearly what I paid for the covers in the first place.

Everything seems so damned expensive now!

Looking at the sellers other items it would appear he is an auto upholsterer who deals in insurance or warranty work in Sydney. He sells mostly complete interior slips for various VWs (including GTi tartan), Hondas and lots of Holden/HSV models. I assume they are all paid for already and then it doesn't matter if they sell for $31 in the end.
