• new vRS owner

Hi guys I picked up my MY13 candy white vRS wagon on Saturday, its a very nice car. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions in near future so hope u guys don't mind.

One thing I'd like to confirm with other vRS DSG owners is that is it normal to have such a short 1st gear? It barely revs before going into 2nd (quite different to my wife's mk5 GTI. Perhaps I'm being too gentle on acceleration?

Hopefully this is normal and something I just have to get used to.

Now for some positives. In the drivers seat Its such a nice place to, love the interior and leather looks and feels good. It has a good visibility and just feels very nice to drive compared to my 2004 Subaru Liberty (which was good in its own right) but the Octavia vRS is in a league above.

ur vRS is closely related to the mk6 gti in terms of components (suspension, engine etc etc), rather than a mk5 gti.

as for a short 1st gear - that's normal. the DSG6 attempts to spend the least amount of time in 1st.
when slowing down, or driving at really low speeds, u'll notice it will stick to 2nd for as long as it can, before it shifts down to 1st.

congrats on the purchase. i'm sure u'll enjoy the new ride very very much.

Even the Superb does that. Can be a bit jolty as it sorts out what its going to do.

Normal colour Neptunes/leather interior. it was an ex-demo so not much choice.

Now your just encouraging me. I know its probably in the users manual but when using the paddles to change gears is there a way to switch it off so that it goes back to auto mode? In my wifes GT you just pull on the + paddle for a while and it turns manual mode off.

from the user's manual:-

"If the rocker switches or are not pressed for some time, the manual shifting switches off. You can also switch off the temporary switch over to manual shifting by pressing the right rocker switch for more than 1 second."

unfortunately the "some time" hasn't been defined, but based on my memory, its about 6 secs i believe.

So the way I understand that is you can only have 'permanent' manual control by moving the Gear selector to the left? Might need to experiment to get the hang of this.

yes, that's exactly it.

I haven't tried holding the + paddle for a long time to put it back to auto mode. might try that tonight on the way home

In my experience after tapping a paddle in auto the system defaults back to D after 8 seconds or when you come to a complete stop.

If I want to override this I simply flick the lever left to manual and straight back to D again.

Yes, same, tap the paddle and you have manual control for 8 seconds
To force it back into auto mode hold the up paddle for over 1 second
