It's biggest benifit is that it is reversible.

if the tyre place is putting weights on the outside rim of the wheel, id be taking it elsewhere.

however, you mention doing the inside of the wheel, maybe don't do it, just the outside face.

on powdercoating/painting, best option IMO, but harder to reverse

Where is this 200-250 powder coating place for 18s? Lol that seems quite cheap. I've called places all around Sydney and it's always been around $100/wheel with the tyres already off the wheel. If you could get powder coating done for that price, definitely go for that imo!

Ask "the speedfighter" re using it on wheels. He has done his and they have lasted very well indeed!

I was only broadly speculating about the cost of powdercoating. My brother in law is a mechanic here in Melbourne and he asked their contact and he said $200-250 for wheels that don't need any repair would be an indication.

I have also been scanning other car forums and at least in Melbourne there have been plentyofpeople able to get your wheels done for less than $400.

I would assume you would be without your wheels for at least a couple of days by the time they blast, coat and bake the wheels.

Well, with some left over plasti dip and a spare hour or 2 the other night, I thought 'what the hell, and decided to do the wheels as a stop gap move until I get them powder coated. At least, if I damage it ot get sick of it, I can peel it off in a few minutes.

It was a bit a rush job, but as I have said it is a forgiving product to use and it has dried nice and flat with only a few imperfections visible on very close inspection.

I love the way it looks with the grille, mirrors, rails and badges done... but I can't show you the other side of the car because I ran out of dip on the second wheel. It just really needs some springs to make it look just right now.

I do think it looks more aggressive from the front like this too!

Thanks for posting your pictures - looks great and very helpful. Just before you started this thread, I was thinking of doing the same to my TSI as a cheap (and reversible) makeover - grille surrounds, roof rails and wheels (not sure about mirrors). The "below the lower grille" treatment like on the sedan (page 1) might also work on a TSI but I haven't seen any pictures of one that's been done.

Is it pretty easy to remove the grille surrounds without breaking anything? I haven't looked closely to see how it's attached.

The grille assembly (including the chrome outer and finned inner sections) is attached to the bonnet by 6 Torx head screws and some push out plastic retaining plugs. As for separating the 2 parts of the grille, that is another story. You might have to ask some of the guys who have replaced the finned centre with the honeycomb replacement from Superskoda.

But, it you are looking to plasti dip the grille, there is no need to separate these 2 pieces. Just remove the whole grille assembly and dip the whole thing or mask off the centre section like I did.

I removed the roof rails and grille but simply masked off the mirrors and badges as you can see in the first lot of photos.

I can't recommend enough visiting the Youtube channel for Dip Your Car and they have about 60 videos on there that walk you through everything from cleaning and masking to painting and removal.

                              Hahah, I'm starting a trend!

Also - I finally replaced my vRS badge, and it contrasts great with the black and blue.

Very cool projects guys. I keep changing my mind about plastidipping mine, but I love how the badges come up in black.

Do you use a knife to trim the edges off?
