I had my GTR up for sale on carsales for 2 years and 1 day before it sold!! price started at 40k and after 2 years it had to go and it ended up selling for 9K! now that is depressing!!!

The prob with Octy's is that there is a flood of ex rentals etc dropping the prices down, great if you're buying but sucks if you're selling privately.

if its only a few months till you wife is back and she needs a car. forget the hassles, just continue paying for it, then she has a nice car to come back to when she returns.

Put it in storage, give to family or a mate while youre overseas.

Or "we" could gladly take care of it for you?? Perhaps on a rotational basis! haha

My company offered salary packaging and I looked at the figures on selling recently and the used price put me off. The problem is that I look at the car, which is immaculate (minus some belt scuffing around the drivers pillar) and I don't want to sell it to someone so cheaply. Sorry, but if pick up a VRS for low-mid 20s, you've got the bargain of the century and I'd feel ripped off. I'll happily keep the car for another 3 years (which is something I've never done with a car, so well done Skoda).

And the used price is around what I expected after 3 years, so no complaints on resale from me.

We are currently thinking we might keep our RS longer than planned. It still is a joy to drive and no issues apart from dealers charging too much. To get the new model it would be a lot more $$$ both in buying and in selling. Ours was bought late 2008 and the initial plan is to keep it until around mid 2014 at the minimum. I have several friends and relatives who keep asking me when I'm selling it so they may sway me to give it up earlier particularly if the new RS has the goods.

                  Have you heard the joke:
Man goes into a service station and says "can I have a petrol cap for a Skoda"
The attendant thinks for a moment and then says "yeah ok, that's a fair trade"

Thanks for your suggestions - I'm sure if I rotated it amongst you guys you'd be happy to share the lease payments?

It will definitely be a sad day when it goes. Seriously the bastard I've ever owned, no problems with it and those heated seats in winter are fabulous!

So, it's up for sale on Carsales, Allclassifieds and Trading Post. Only tante rest so far are the standard scam SMS messages.

My Octavia has finally been sold. I thought I would give you all an update on the process and the final result...

I initially advertised it back in early May at a starting price of $25,500. It was still under lease, and that was roughly what the lease payout was worth. Here's a summary of how it went:

                        - standard flood of SMS scams in the initial days,
                        - one enquiry from Newcastle, found something closer to home,
                        - one enquiry from Sydney, never heard back,
                        - price progressively dropped on the theory that's it only worth what someone is willing to pay,
                        - another enquiry last month, never heard back,
                        - price dropped to $21,000,
                        - started negotiating with someone who got us down to $18,800. By this stage, I was always resigned to a loss on the lease but this was a pretty steep loss. Anyway, this potential buyer wanted to go down even further and I said no (good thing),
                        - this week we had an offer of $20,500. Negotiated down to $20,000 because it's due for a service and seemed to be the best offer,
                        - SOLD. At $20,000 this is a $1,500 loss on the lease payout. I'm sad but then figure its about 2c per km. Did I get 2c per km of extra driving pleasure out of the car? Definitely,
                        - and then my wife got another call last night!

So, the car has now gone. As I'm overseas, I had my last drive about 6 weeks ago. I'm pretty sad and already can't wait till I get back to Australia and can buy another one!

Thanks for the detailed breakdown of the sale. Its really helpful for many of us to read what its actually like selling a car privately. Out of interest which of the websites (Carsales, Allclassifieds and Trading Post) gave the best bang for buck?

I sold my Ocy just over a week ago.

I advertised it at $20,900 (2009 Ocy RS Wagon TDi DSG with 82k on clock plus the balance of the extended warranty @ 11 months left). Had a couple of time waster enquiries initially with the 1st serious enquiry after 5 days. He drove/paid a deposit the following day. Sold for $20k. I had it for 4 years so the resale rate was 48% - pretty good!

Sold it via Carsales. I've now sold 4 cars on Carsales and the Ocy was getting plenty of hits % wise compared the other cars and sold very quick (Other cars were Pajero, Falcon XR6 & Citroen C4 Picasso).

                              Cheers

Just put our RS up on carsales.com.au, starting price of $21K.
Going to be an interesting process seeing how long it takes to sell and what price we end up.
(BTW, if anybody's interested in it, PM me )
