Martin, would an offset of ET 40 be too much on the Octy?

Yes, I believe so (maybe not the optimal offset but will work)
No problems on strut clearance, the wheels will poke out 17mm more
I have ET45 and they poke out 12mm more - looks fine

              This is 8" ET35. ET40 would be 5mm inwards

Martin, those wheels look awesome. tempting. And Brad, that's nice to see how et35 fits. I've been looking at something in that offset range (between 45-35) and that looks good to me.

These are my old wheels 40,000km - 50,000km. 17x8 BBS something or others (had the big screw on nut/cap). I bought them on eBay for $400, ran them for 10,000km & flogged them for $300ish.

They were pretty tatty & the excess poke made the steering unpleasant. Also, the OEM nuts didn't protrude through the hub enough so there was 3mm less thread engagement.

There's a similar set (exposed nuts & small centre cap) on ebay atm for $200. Machining back to ET40ish is $50/wheel & the seller has only put up a photo of one wheel which usually means the others are a bit knocked about. Allow $600 for decent 235/45x17 tyres & suddenly some of the other 2nd hand wheel/tyre packages start looking cheap(ish).

You need to be patient to pick up the bargains. I bought my current wheels (16x7.5 ET50) for $400. They'd been roaded for 1000km & were mint with Michelin tyres (rears still had the dags on them).

The BBS were very light ~7kg. The OEM Audi rims are about 3kg per corner heavier

They look awesome and the price is even better - that's a classic pattern (same as what I've bought)

That's Po the TellyTubbie. #1 daughters favourite doll for a long time. He was just hanging round the garage so I strapped him on for a quick ride to Campbelltown every day. His face is black now.
