I think there are a few important things to remember with insurance that go farbeyond the price.

I have been with AAMifor about 12 years straight and yes I am on a very good rate of around $545 per year with a free windscreen every year and a few other bonuses, but I stay with them because I know I get good service when something goes wrong.

In my 16 years on the road i have only had one at fault accident, but been the innocent party at least 8 times including once when a van rolled into me at the lights and then drove off. I later found out he was an unlicenced courier and had 3 outstanding arrest warrants! But I digress.

Each time i havwe been givenvthe optiown obtaining quotes at preferred repairers or simply drop it off at an assessment centre and have it taken care of. I then have access to cheap rental cars that can be claimed back .

Then i get a life time warranty on repairs, a guarantee ot genuine parts and i have only ever had to go back once to have a minor detailing error fixed.

For all these reasons i simply say stick with who you trust to do a good job when you need them. The longer you stay, the better you get treated and the lower the costs become.

I find this to be a totally painful exercise, poorly designed websites, insurers that won't touch a lightly modded car (stock turbo on an old 1.8T), but you don't find out until 15 pages of info in, total lack of info as to what causes the prices to change.

My current renewal is $714, re quote from same insurer was over $900, CGU was over $1200 but couldn't cover some mods, Shannons I'm not bothering with as they were totally noncompetitive last time and not much help on the phone, Youi was over $2k (no you don't get me), your insurance was more than double the cheapest and I can't see any advantage.

At least I'm happy that the level of cover I'm renewing is OK, I know I drive a modified car (OMG!), but its a freaking Polo that does <10,000ks a year. I've all my points, no accidents at all in 8 years, etc. the system generally does not cater for me.

how do you think they pay for the constant run of ads in prime time?

candy_wagon ive seen some shonky repairs from AAMI repairers. lucky for me ive found a repairer locally that I trust and does fantastic work. he will be working, again, on the fiat and im sure that the work will be no less than factory looking condition.

I'm with Shannons for Home and Contents and for my Pirelli Insurance. Its just over $1,000 per annum for the Pirelli at 60% NCB.

Dont know how old most of you guys are, that makes a huge difference to premiums...

I'm 27 and have a perfect driving history, I pay $1872 pa for the Skoda and our mk1 cabriolet together, with all modifications listed, with Shannons. I used to just have my car with them but when I added the cabby to the policy the premium for that car was cheaper than with the previous insurer and for higher agreed value and better cover aswell. Also, the shannons greenslip price is the best I could find by $100 (but you have to be with them be able to purchase a greenslip with them).

I think if I was as honest with any other insurer as I am with shannons, I'd be paying as much or more - so it just depends what kind of cover you expect.

My folks just got screwed by NRMA for an excess when their car was hit whilst parked on the side of the road, and the car that hit it ended up parked on the side of the road infront (it was undrivable) but the driver did a runner and did not admit fault.

NRMA were much the same as GIO. Apparently a 2 litre turbo TSI ,RS is high risk to both of them.

Be careful with anyone like NRMA, RACV, CGU etc

I got side swiped a few weeks back, the other driver was at fault but did a runner after I pulled over, I got their plates though... Took info to police who weren't interested in chasing them down just put there plates in the system if they happen to get pulled over for something else. CGU/RACV/NRMA policy is the licence plate is irrelevant, if you do not have the drivers name and address they will not investigate it for you and YOU get the at-fault claim and you are liable for your excess, as per their contract..

AAMI and Suncorp don't do this, as long as you have plates and make police report they will not make you pay excess or take at-fault claim..

Long story short out of pure luck I pulled up behind her the other day and when she stopped approached her and got her details, so out of pure LUCK it was resolved. She has been charged by police and I got my excess back.. But still changing to AAMI, it was just pure luck I pulled up behind her.. LOL

Sadly AAMI is more expensive than CGU for the Scout, the normal Octavia they are the same but AAMI consider the 4x4 scout higher risk for some crazy reason?

I called up NRMA when I got rear ended by a Subaru (which was killed, Skoda was fine except for bumper )
They told me to make a police report, then ask the coppers nicely for the drivers details from the numberplate.

I forgot to make the police report, but I reckon the $300 repair/repaint is a lot less than the $1,600 excess. And given that it happened last year some time... Hmm.

Even worse than that - my folks were with NRMA, their caravelle was sideswiped while parked and the driver did a runner - but their car was undrivable (they left it in the road infront of my folks' car) so getting their plates was easy. Police investigated, driver denied they were driving the vehicle at the time - NRMA made my folks pay the excess.

                          What a joke!

Anyway, I'm with shannons... You pay the price, but the service is excellent.

in qld its a criminal offence to leave the site of a accident.
Regardless of damage to a vehicle apparently so insurance company getting details shouldnt be a problem provided they arent stolen.
