  • Octavia RS sedan Vs Focus XR5 ?

Bit rich asking owners and fans of VW/Skoda to help with decision but I might as well.

I have 35-37 to spend and just test drove an RS sedan. I was impressed with refinement compared to the Fiesta XR4/Colt Turbo and Polo GTi I have driven.

I figure an extra 10k will get me something more quality built and poised.

The RS wasn't breakneck fast like a WRX is - more smooth power delivery and decent handling but not jarring.

I have been offered a RS sedan with about 30kms on it for 37k driveaway with trade-in.

On other hand I been spying XR5's for 33-35k which was my intention in first place till I checked the RS out.

    What thinks ye??

Golf GTi are hard to come by in WA and even then they are at least 40k driveaway with about 5000k on clock at least.

Don't want to mod or chip - bit worried bout the resale value with an unestablished car brand even if it VW clone.

You wouldn't drive 40K to look at a car? Why ever not.

I'm obviously a GTI fan, but two people I know bought the XR5 (both in Orange - looks good) and they both love it...both love the power and poise of the car...and again, it does look good.

i looked at an XR5 and yes they go well... but unlike there sister car the Volvo C30, they are quite slow. The C30T5 gets to 100 in under 6 seconds.. XR5 with same running gear is closer to 7sec. less than 100kg difference. I found the XR5 to be far less adept on any road that wasnt a billiard table. One thing i have learnt from the RS i have is that its ballance with suspension and tyres are fantastic for 90% of the roads.
If you after a quick cheap car thats funky yeah the XR5 is a good thing, but the Skoda RS is so much more car. And the best thing with the Skoda is you get more options.. Sedan/Wagon etc.

If $$$$ are a concern you need to look at running costs (fuel, maintenance, insurance etc), not just the purchase price. How long you intend to keep this vehicle for impacts on how important resale value is as well.

novated lease for 4yrs - of which 3yrs will be covered under warranty

resale is one issue on my mind - VW have great resale but it's too early to tell if that will carry through to Skoda.

Dog & Lemon Guide don't rate VW much pointing to poor reliabilty which is bit concerning as well. What says ye..

Personally, i'd go the Focus. Resale is likely to be the same or possibly better as it's getting a following, the 0-100 time is misleading because it's great in-gear, it needs a gear shift 2-3 at about 95kph so the 0-100 time looks worse than it really feels.

In a year's time, if Skoda have establihed themselves, there'll be no worry about resale, brand etc, but at this stage, go the Focus. The best sport hatch out there is the GTI, but you'll save plenty by going the focus. And it's nearly as good.

Sorry guys but I decided on the Focus XR5 instead.

I thought the Skoda was more a car I buy when I'm in my 30s and have kids - I'm out for the outlandish chav style the XR5 presents. When I heard the motor growl it sealed the deal - you have to hear these things.

Cheers for the input it was a hard decision.

Cheers. Hope you like your XR5. Please come back after you have owned it for a few months and let us know what you think of it after you've gotten past the "honeymoon" phase of ownership. It is always good to get different opinions on different cars.

After the lease expires I'll probably have kids so I'll be keen to look into the wagon vRS assuming they still make and sell them here.

I'll let u know about the joys and pitfalls of owning an XR5.
