Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Exhaust smell in cabin

OK, so I have had my RS now for 13,000kms, and I have been noticing something for a while now, and have experimented to work it out...

When I really give it a bootful on a spirited drive or take off from the lights, especially in S mode, I notice a distinct exhaust odour in the cabin.

I have tried it with the aircon on both 'outside' air and 'recirc' air. Both the same results.
I have tried it with the windows up and with them down.

Dont ever notice it in normal driving.

So it is only after really driving it hardish through the gears...

Any thoughts as to why it is happening guys?

    Thanks

It's in inbuilt Skoda feature to make it unpleasant for the driver to waste fuel and to drive in anything other than a safe manner. Very clever people these Czechs are.

    (Really i have no idea)

From a layman, I would say get it checked, could be an exhaust leak coming in through the firewall or under the car, maybe it only builds up enough when you really push it.. AFAIK exhaust smell in car (that isn't from the car in front of you) is generally a bad sign and should be checked asap..

its probably not a leak at all.

its what I like to call 'hammer smell'. when all those parts suddenly warm up to hotter than their normal operating temps (ie your day-to-day driving) then all the plastics and metals give off an odour. happens in every car ive owned and driven.

if youre worried about it, get it checked. but I rekon its nothing as youre not smelling it when driving 'normally'.

you can generally hear an exhaust leak............
