  • weight of your Octavia

Just curious to see what the claimed weight of their Ocy is on your rego papers?? I reckon NSW RTA are being sneaky and bumping the claimed weight into the next rego bracket. Considering on putting the RS on a certified weigh bridge and double check.
I'm sure the Skoda specs say the RS TDI with DSG is around 1450kg, but the RTA conveniently says it's 1504kg - which is the lowest limit for the next rego bracket

Just checked ours and for a Vic 103 TDI DSG the Tare is 1475, but with me in the car it would most prob be the later you've posted
    Hope this helps

Interesting thread mate...I was going to be smart and post some funny comment about my increase in weight due to fast food runs etc...
but...you have got me thinking...I will check my rego papers now....

Mine says Tare weight is 1410
It is a 2012 RS petrol wagon with DSG...

      Could the Diesel be heavier??

I reckon someone at RTA is 'lisdexic' and got your figures mixed up.

How much difference does that make in terms of $$$??

2007 1.8tsi manual sedan = tare 1500 (rego papers). According to GOAUTO it is 1450kg.

        weight bracket are:
        up to 975kg
        976-1154
        1155 - 1504
        1505 - 2504.

You appear to be at the upper limit & the same bracket as all the other Octavias.

regoACT have weighed my TSI DSG Liftback at 1465 kg!! 50kg more than it should be.
looks like they've gone with highest figure available.

          brochure says:-

          TSI (DSG) Wagon - 1410 (1430)

          TDI (DSG) Liftback - 1430 (1450)
          TDI (DSG) Wagon - 1445 (1465)

Just looked at my rego papers and it's the same story as yours... Mine is listed as Tare Weight: 1540.
1155kg to 1504kg is $323.00 and 1505kg to 2504kg is $461.00. So they are ripping us $138.00 per year.

Great pick-up! I'm going to ring the pricks right now...

Been to the rubbish tip with my Ocy a few times (RS TDi DSG) and noted the weight on the weigh bridge (which goes up in 10kg increments). If you take out the approx weight being dumped, me, the non standard crap in car and fuel, the car weighs approx 1,450kg. That includes a towbar so take another 10-15kg off.

dazag says 1504kg; ausspace says 1540kg. Maybe the RTA use dice to determine the weight.

"Registration fees for vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) are based on the tare (unladen) weight of the vehicle. The more it weighs, the higher the cost."

Sounds like they got it wrong. I considered they might measure wet weight, but even that is only another 45kg or so.

Just spoke to the RMS (RTA)... Apparently the weight is determined by the dealer when they initially lodge the paperwork to the roads authority for registration. In other words, it's entirely up to the dealer to determine how much the vehicle weighs and in-turn how much registration will cost.
She said she is going to bring up the paperwork to check to see if there was a transposition error... if there is no error she said I will need to get a blue slip and take my car to a weigh station to determine the actual weight and then re-register my car.
Poor old North Shore Skoda may expect a phone call from me...

Just noticed my rego certificate also says "Seating Capacity: 3". When I last checked I'm sure my car had 5 seat belts... Maybe the 2 front seats are just for show

Tare weight of any vehicle should be the unladen vehicle with 10 litres of fuel and coolant in radiator Nothing else.

Will have spare tyre but no driver or anything else.

My rego papers are at odds with reality as well. The Tare is OK at 1450kg, but the GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) is shown as 1460kg. The GVM is the maximum recommended weight a vehicle can be when loaded.

Vehicle weights for registration are normally submitted to the RTA/RMS by the manufacturer/importer. Spec sheets cannot be used as a guide as they will generally quote above or below, depending on how the vehicls is sold. If it is generally sold as a tow vehicle, then they will use a higher weight because this then allows a higher trailer weight. If the vehicle is generally sold as a general vehicle, then they will use a lower weight as this can imply that it is a lighter more fuel efficient vehicle. Also, the spec sheet weight will not necessarily include any optional equipment.

The kerb weight used for registration requires a certain amount of fuel, and then unless the particular model can only be fitted with certain options, they have to nominate all options when providing the value to the RTA/RMS. There also has to be a specfied minimum amount of fuel in the tank.

Now you can opt for a lower weight, but as you have found out, you have to get a weighbridge ticket and go through an inspection to get it changed. This then means that you now have a lower trailer weight allowed, and if/when you sell the car in the future, the buyer will also have to live with the lower kerb weight unless they want a higher weight for towing.

The RTA/RMS does not make this determination. It is the vehicle manufacturer/importer who does. Also it is odd that a weight bracket starts at 1504 kg. I would have thought that it would have been 1505 kg. If the RTA/RMS make the determination (which they don't), by nominating 1504 kg, I would have thought they would have given you the maximum allowance in a particular bracket..
