Thinking of trading Octavia for bigger car

After almost 3yrs we now have 2 kids and whilst boot is huge back seat space is becoming an issue to carry an extra passenger in the back.

I don't want a huge changeover so been thinking abt the Mondeo XR5. I actually nearly ended up with the Mondeo TDCI but it was slooow and not very fuel efficient compared to 118TSI, interior is a little boring but it has many positives and stacked with kit especially the XR5.

Frustratingly there are not many options except Falcon and Commodore which the XR5 favours very well against. Passat/Suberb don't have the width like above 3 cars and I'm leaning towards manual anyway.


Anyone get a trade in price for a 118TSI DSG wagon lately?

As a former owner of a Focus XR5, I would be very wary of the fuel consumption of the turbo 5 cylinder. While they sound like heaven and go quite well, even just trolling around the suburbs will see you with fuel consumption of over 12L per 100km - bearing in mind its 98 octane too! Personally I hate the current Mondeo interior with its flat seats, high seating position, low steering column and shiny dash fascia.

An alternative would be to wait til the new Mondeo comes out next year which looks very nice with (believe it or not) a hint of Aston Martin in the front end. If they do a ST version like they did with the new focus, that would be fast, manual AND relatively fuel effieient.

thanks for feedback candy_wagon. I have heard the 5cyl isn't great on fuel. a new mondeo wouldn't be a small changeover I am looking for

From what I can see the Octavia is 1 mm wider in the rear with 1 mm more headroom. Close enough that it's line ball with no effective advantage to either I would say in raw measurements.
I would be very, very carefully stuffing large relatives in the back of both the Mondeo and Octavia and taking them for back to back drives and asking their opinions before I leapt into a changeover.

i didn't think there was much of difference between the octavia & the modeo - hence the change over to a mondeo wouldn't have provided the ability to carry an extra passenger in the back, comfortably.


and i presume 2 kids means 2 kids on child/booster seats?

Hmmm I have read in reviews a few times the mondeo is actually wider than the falcon. Will have to recheck in person but from memory mondeo is appreciably wider in cabin.
We have 4 and 6 more years for child/ booster seats so no point looking at the 7 seater SUVs

For what it's worth I had a Hyundai i45 hire car last week. After driving my RS it seemed huge. But as KIWI alluded to, looks can be deceiving. And to be honest, I've had Hyundai hire cars before, and while they are well appointed cars they don't have anything like a European fit and finish. The flip side of that of course is that they don't have a European price tag. I noticed that with a full tank the projected fuel range was a helluva lot less than I get from my TDI.

I've got the Ocy RS Wagon and the missus a Mondeo Ecoboost hatch. The width difference in the rear size is heaps. We've got 2 booster seats in each car (4+ years) and I can sit between the kids in the Mondeo. With the Ocy forget it - there is a good 15cm difference. The Mondeo is wide enough for 3 booster seats also and just as wide as the Pajero we had. Rear legroom the Mondeo is in a different class too - a good 10cm more than the Ocy.

Correction, the width difference between the Ocy and Mondeo in the rear seat is 8cm not 15cm, the difference though is noticeable when sitting there.

We had a 6 until recently and the Skoda. A mondeo won't solve your issues, we have a 4 yr old and 2 yr old. We now have a Santa fe and adults can fit ok with quite big kids seats. A mondeo isn't even close.

If anything I'd sit tight as the new Octavia will be much bigger.

was actually thinking about sorrento, Santa Fe, kluger but the drive may bore me. Been keeping a close eye on Octavia III but realistically likely to be a big changeover for a RS even in manual. May try and sit tight and prep myself to owning a commodore or falcon

If you thinking about the Korean cars make sure you do extended test drive and read as many reviews as possible before you buy one. They don't perform that well as it looks from their advertising materials. Asking the Hyundai owners could be misleading too, because many of them jump into Hyundai from 15-20 year old cars and never even been as a passenger in Euro car.
