The 1.8TSI is a restricted vehicle in NSW, sorry to say. P-Platers can't drive them.

P1/P2 - High performance vehicle restrictions
2012 Octavia vRS TDI. Darkside big turbo, 3bar tune, other stuff. 200kW/650Nm.
    1990 Mk1 Cabrio. 1.9 IDI w/ 18PSI.

    Not including hers...

I did the opposite. My daughter got a new car and my wife kept driving the 6 years old Forester. The process had repeated 2 years later, when the younger one started to drive. I'm believer that the driver with less experience should be driving the safer (newer) car. Money and if he/she deserves or not, aside.

Am aware of the restrictions but will be applying for an exemption as it will be the only vehicle available to her and it's on the list of "moderate performance turbo/supercharged vehicles that are eligible for exemption" . Will put it back to a stock map before she gets it (possibly even a lower power than stock) & will be reviewing her driving quite closely (data-logging, etc).

        Here's my link/s Overview

Indeed, this is what several motoring groups recomend.

          1) Octavia will probably still be hers as any improvements in safety beyond the Octavia will only be incremental (ie: it has 6 airbags, stability control, ABS, 4 wheel disc brakes, good crash results, good on-road dynamics and a reasonable amount of metal/mass, etc therefore the "basics" are covered). Certainly I prefer her to drive a 2007 Octy/Golf than a 2012 Getz/Yaris/Chery, etc.
          2) Her mothers car doesn't come into it as it's a company drive & only wife or me can drive it (according to her usage contract).
          3) My next car might not necessarily be safer than the Octavia. Might not even be a car.

I can't buy these in where I live. Once it would get stuck in the pothole, I wouldn't get it out. That's how bad the roads are in Adelaide, not long ago, we had the o/s visitors and on the way from the airport they've asked "when did the war ended in here, that the roads are still not repaired?"

The SA should be renamed to the state of never ending road works. To call it, "The garden state" is very misleading.

Interesting looking at the link, and brad's list.

So with V8s, and turbo'd or supercharged gas guzzlers out the Audi A6 or Jag XF are both OK then?

                Both V6 turbo diesels, .................... around 180kW.

Definately no logic applied by the RMS seat warmers.
I work in a government dept & can understand how these decisions are made - I know my own boss rarely gives me projects in my area of expertise. We had a small emergency several months back where we needed trade qualified based engineers on a task. He elected to keep me at my desk because "You haven't got the experience". Hello? 30% of my working life has been up to my elbows in grease. The issue was he didn't want me working in somebody elses castle.

                  V6 Calais / SV6 is OK (190kw??); XR6 is OK (185kw?) but 96kw 4.2 V8 VB Commodore is out (thank God).

GTI Golf (146kw) is out but R32 (196kw?) is OK because it hasn't got a turbo.

Weirdest bit is that you see plenty of P-Platers driving around in turbo skylines, GTI Golfs, etc. Even had a P-Plater pass me this morning in a Z4 BMW.

Welcome to NSW. The nanny state run by mushrooms.

Now that'd be an interesting conversation over many drinks!

                    - I know my own boss rarely gives me projects in my area of expertise.
It's called Defending One's Empire. The type of bureaucrat who engages in the behaviour is seen to know what they're doing, because they've been doing it for years. These guys usually live and work by the theory that if one never makes a decision one can never be blamed for making a wrong one. In their world no one is more dangerous to them than the person who has the expertise that they are perceived to have.

Welcome to NSW. The nanny state run by mushrooms.
The so called "nanny state" attempts to intervene when the cost of the selfishness and/or stupidity of a few in a society is deemed to have become a danger to all in that society. Unfortunately, the reactions of politicians are more often than not knee jerk ones, because they feel that they have to be seen to be doing something, and doing it with conviction. We all know it's bollocks, and we often see new laws introduced which have no chance of ever being enforced by police. It sucks, but I wouldn't expect any changes in a hurry.

but 96kw 4.2 V8 VB Commodore is out (thank God).
If you change your mind I know where there's one of these. One owner (who else would buy it???), and converted to LPG. I think the only thing giving it any structural integrity is the roof racks.

Back to the list. No V8s, no turbos. Don't let your daughter see the Audi A7 6.0L TDI 368kW V12 twin turbo then.

Yes indeed, it is the stupidest set of laws around!!!

So we would rather put our young inexperienced drivers in a 25 year old clapped out commodore with crap brakes, bad steering, worn tyres etc etc...than a new polo or golf that happens to have a turbo or something in it!!!!!?????

It is like the word TURBO is a dirty scary five letter word????

IDIOTS is a better word for the lawmakers....

That exemption list is pretty good now Tigger. 18 months back it was very short.

                        glad I don't make laws

Bottom Scratcher: My boss actually makes decisions, unlike his counterparts. He's most unusual. He just gives me lots of jobs that I have no previous experience in. Shouldn't complain - possibly he's trying to stop me from getting bored.

You know I was just rethinking the original question in this post, and it hit me....

Your car is worth whatever it is worth to you!
(ok that doesnt work if reselling , sure, but what I mean is, sometimes we get hung up on the market value, and we forget what the car means to us personally...which is made up of more that just dollars)

Is that a bit too deep for 7:30 am???

                          Cheers

Without going all zen, my immediate thought when I first read the title of the OP, "What is my Octavia RS worth?" was - Whatever someone is willing to pay for it. That's how market values are determined.

I'll call what you're alluding to as the personal value. This has many variables, financial and emotional, which usually all get weighed up when an owner is contemplating a replacement vehicle for an existing one. Some people can't wait to get rid of a car, while to others their existing car (like as depicted in a recent TV ad) has become to them part of the family.

Financial and emotional considerations also come into play when purchasing new vehicles. It's mostly the emotional part of a prospective purchaser's thought processes that dealership sales people do their best to tap into. Win the heart, and the mind (and wallet) will follow.

Are we just talking about petrol manual hatches in Sprint Yellow with over 100,000 kms? Because in Aug, I sold my 2008 diesel DSG wagon in Race Blue with 45,000 kms for $27,000.

Are you talking a private sale or trade-in - big difference. but you also have the perfect spec - blue, diesel, DSG. Again, vast difference to 80,000kms, Yeloow and manual. in Sydney.

Bottom scratcher, I agree with you - but in the case of a trade, there is also the risk factor the dealer acquirse and insures themselves against. They will put my $13k trade out on the lot (they will probably keep it and put it out front as a hero car to get people in, but punters will probably buy something else) but if they are lucky someone will come in within a month who wants a manual yellow wagon. They then "discount" it by say $3k and they are laughing. Alternatively they can't push someone into it with a large discount and in three months they wholesale it for say $13-14k, or less perhaps if they get caught, and are rid of it. Not many people want Skodas, even less manual ones.

Suffice to say, I love my V6 wagon, got a decent changeover, the previous one cost me almost nothing in 3 years other than service, fuel and tyres due to tax deductions from the stimulus package and we all win.

I am utterly impressed with the Superb - the quietness, smoothness, performance, good open road fuel economy, brilliant equipment levels, space - my basketballer kids can stretch out- and it even plays DVDs. The sound system is, err, Superb, particularly on music DVDs (and I am an audio buff) and nothing offers the space, equipment, handling and quality at anywhere near the price.

WHo cares what other people think?
