  • Bad news for future Octavia??? (based on the Golf MK7)

So if you all have not done so already, take a look at the Golf MK7 section of the forum and check out the pics from the Paris motor show of the New GTI...

Seeing as our Octavias are based on Golf GTIs, I am not too happy to see that the new golf GTI has the electromechanical hand brake unit like in the passat and tiguan.

What is so wrong with a REAL handbrake, especially for a manual car that is meant to be a 'performance drivers car'?

    My two cents worth anyway....

    Any thoughts?

People think "Ooh, shiny!" and they buy it.

That being said, how well does the auto handbrake work?
Like, how quick is it to engage/disengage, etc?

Also - 2ltr twin-turbo diesel?... Methinks the Mk7 GTD is going to be nice.

I was thinking the same thing too but the new SEAT Leon (based on MQB and revealed before the Golf Mk 7) has a proper mechanical handbrake so I'm pretty sure the new Octavia will have it too as they're both cheaper cousins to the Golf.

On another note, release the bloody Octavia Mk3 already!

I assumed for sure that handbrake is coming, they are in everything now. I don't mind them, but no rally car driving in the future or handbrakes turns anymore. For 99% of the population they are fine, I've used them in a few Audis and have no issue with them.

I had it in my Tiguan Manual, and hated it!

It doesnt always engage the first time, and the light on the dash goes out after 15 secs or so, which means you dont know if it is engaged unless you open the door and lift the button again.

So, if you park and do not leave it in gear, it can roll away......

AND...When the battery goes flat....well, that was fun I can tell you!!!

If you thought this was a travesty of a "hot hatch" that still has to balance practicality/daily drive etc, wait till you see what they did with a real "drivers' car", the new Boxster.

            I am very shattered.

The real as you call it handbrake will disappear fairly soon when the manufacturers get their way and stop producing manual gearboxes on some models. It's way cheaper from a design, manufacturing and support point of view to have one transmission than it is to have two.
The day will come and it wont be far away.

I'm hoping I expire in a ball of flames before that day comes.

Luckily, it should still be a few years.

No, the new Octavia is going to be Mondeo-sized and priced (where that leaves the Superb I have no idea but if they're pushing the Superb upmarket I'm thinking a V6 TDI would be a great idea Skoda). You didn't think that Skoda would stop making their best and most popular model did you?

Don't knock it till you try it

I always thought it was the Boxster was a poor man's 911 and a poser car but there's just something very amazing about how it connects the driver to the car.

                          Rapid is new Octy.
Octy is upsized to more Superb-size.
Superb?... No idea, Maybe Falcadore size?

Come to think of it, I don't think any of the VW passenger cars have the V6 TDI (minus Touraeg) so giving that engine to their budget lineup would be a bit strange.

Unfortunately this is true but it's a big car (Audi A6 sizing here) and a diesel with around the same power as the 191FSI (which hopefully will become the 220FSI from the Passat when the Superb is facelifted next year) would be a good idea I would have thought, otherwise the engines are identical to the Octavia/Yeti which I don't like but that's how VW does it.

The Rapid is NOT the Octavia replacement!
It was purposely brought in to slot in between the Fabia & the new, soon to b released bigger mk3 Octavia.
The mk3 Octavia will b the 1st (in the Skoda range) to use the new MQB platfor.
