    Thought I'd consult with the brains trust on this one...

    Had a new clutch pack installed in my 118 tsi 7spd DSG last week under warranty and was told by the workshop to expect a bit of roughness in the first week. There was definately some clunks when shifting from reverse into D, and a few rough changes when pulling up to a stop (using 1st gear) but as advised this seems to be smoothing out.

    Strangely though there is also now a vibration on startup feels like a rough idle however this stops when the air con is switched off. Also if the air con is on when I switch the car off thr vibration continues for a few seconds after the engine stops. This doesn't seem to be ironing out like the gearbox roughness.

    Any ideas?

    Vibration sounds like the radiator fan. They can run for a while after engine shutdown, when they do its on high speed. Its coming on to ensure there is enough air flow for the AC radiator.

      I've read of fans running on shutdown in other threads. I guess my question is, what would have changed when they fit the clutch pack that would cause my car to start doing this? The vibration is quite noticeable and definately wasn't there prior to the repair

        I'd say they've left a small wrench in the engine bay, close to the fan, this is what's causing the vibrations, like when a surgeon accidently leaves a scalpel inside a patient once they close them up...annoying but easy fixed.

          Does anyone know if the manual gear box in the Octavia RS 147TSI is the same as what's in the VW Tiguan?

          I wanted to test drive a manual Octavia RS TSI yesterday and they didn't have one (either sedan or wagon), so I asked the 14 year old sales kid who was serving me at the time and he didn't have a clue. Told me manual RS TSI's are almost impossible to come by so he tried selling me a DSG.....and a white demo one at that......all of which I wasn't interested in....why do salesmen try and sell you something you don't want.

            Because they have targets to meet and only get paid commission upon delivery so if you order a car for delivery in 3-4 months and that person is not around then they effectively get nothing for the sale. Apart from that many buyers have no idea what they want and often end up with something completely different from what they said they wanted when they walk in the showroom door. The trick from the salespersons point of view is working out those customers who know exactly what they want and those who have no real idea despite what they say.

              Yes he was seriously trying to suss me out and understand if he could persuade me into buying something I didn't want.

              He was pretty surprised by how much I knew about the car.....more than him in fact. Gonna try and different Skoda outlet this week to see if I have better luck finding a manual to test drive and also see how interested they are in haggling price.

              I assume if I'm ordering one from the factory, my ability to haggle a good price is somewhat reduced?

                Also, from all the pictures I've seen, the steering wheel on the RS TSI Manual appears to not have any stereo, bluetooth controls etc, whereas the DSG has these in addition to the paddle gear levers.

                Why does the manual not get the stereo/bluetooth controls etc?

                  I don't know, it's the one thing that almost dissuaded me from buying mine in 2008. It's not like they don't exist so has always been an odd decision.

                    vRS TDI manual doesn't have the steering wheel controls, either...
                    I'm under the impression that the vRS wheel only comes in two flavours: Naked, or with buttons and paddles.

                    I'm considering swapping mine over, and somehow engineering the paddles to be switches for something... Don't know what, yet, though.
                    Stereo mute, or something, maybe?

                      I wonder if the Golf GTI wheel could be fitted to a Skoda?? I reckon that is the worlds best steering wheel at the moment! Just perfect. My wife has it on her Polo GTI and it is great..

                        Skoda assume if they customer is too tight to prop for a DSG trans, then they wouldn't want stereo/bluetooth either.

                            Yep, her Polo GTI wheel has paddles and all the buttons for audio and phone etc...
                            Just like the Golf GTI

                            As for the stitching, yesit is the black alcantara, with the rs logos and red highlight stitching etc... I havent seen any others out there with it as yet.

                              I have an MY11 RS TSI manual wagon, and like you I could only test drive a DSG. The salesman seemed almost puzzled when I asked for a manual. I had to order the manual in blind faith that it would be a nice gearbox. I hate driving autos, and as nice as the DSG can be, I thought in case I kept the car post warranty, I didn't want any associated risks and maintenance costs with the DSG.

                              And I can tell you I've been very happy with the manual. It's a nice gearbox. Changes are pretty smooth and not at all notchy. Mine has now done 34k and it's still silky smooth to change. But more importantly, there's a perfect ratio for every situation. In terms of ratios it's the best box I've driven. In general coasting around town it's quite happy at 60kph in 6th. I find that I rarely use 2nd around town apart from initial take off, as 3rd is so flexible. I don't use 4th much either, there's just no need. If I give it a few berries at the lights I often go from 2nd straight to 5th or 6th.
