Uncomfortable RS seats??

Hey all,

Ok, so this will probably sound strange, but after 500 kms in my new RS (Which I Love BTW), I am finding the seat to be uncomfortable on the sides. I find that the side bolsters at the very upper thighs on both sides 'dig' in and feel as if they are too narrow...

Before we all rush to respond, I can clarify that I am of an average build, not large legged or of larger build....

Also, I have come from a Tiguan with the leather 'sports' seats.

Also my wife has a 2012 Polo GTI and those seats are awesome...very comfortable, and do not dig in at all at the same spot.

And I have driven at least 15 GTI golfs and scirocco R as well as countless standard vw models over the years.

I never really got to test the RS seats before buying, and therefore just assumed they would be like all other VW type seats...

Any thoughts?

I can honestly say after 2.5 years of owning my RS wagon, my wife nor I have no complaints about the seats. My mate who is on the larger side of life (roughly 130kgs) did say that he couldn't own a car with such sports seats as he finds the bolstering too tight on his ample frame...but no complaints here.

I must admit I find the side bolsters ok, but not as good as the GTi. But I agree that the under thigh supports dig into my legs and can get annoying on longer trips. I am kind of on the large side of average I guess - 180cm, 95kg.

I put it down to a 'splay legged' seating position I naturally gravitate to which would put more pressure on the sides of my thighs.

I will say though, they are much better than my old Focus XR5's Recaros that felt like you were bolted into the seat. Made entry and exit a potentially painful game too!

If they don't fit you they don't fit you. They fit me fine. Until such a time as the human race comes in one standard size this problem will continue with everything from clothes to chairs to bench heights and car seats. If it gets to the point where you can't live with it or get used to the fit your only choices are to sell the car or get accessory seats.

I find the seats very comfortable. But I'm on the smaller side, 175cms/68kgs.

both the missus & i have no issues with the front seat comfort.

i can't say much about the rear seats though as i haven't been a rear passenger in my car yet!!

It took me quite a while to get my driving position to a degree of comfort that I didn't want to fiddle around with anymore. I didn't buy a sports model with sports seats for luxury, but I wouldn't say that the seats or the ride is uncomfortable. In fact, I'm very happy with it.

I'm a little long in the leg. The side bolsters have never bothered me, but I do miss having a forward/rear tilt function. I don't like to have the front edge applying pressure to my hammies, so that means putting the seat up/down, forward/back, angle the rear squab, and then steering wheel up/down, in/out, to get overall comfort in my legs, back, ankles, arms, and shoulders. The seat is one set of factors, and the steering wheel adds a few more. I would think that a straighter leg would lower the front of the thigh to be in line with the line of the seat, and maybe take some pressure from the upper thigh. Just keep experimenting. I'm sure it'll be worth it.

We can't do anything about it, but another factor for driving comfort is the offset between the seat, steering wheel, and pedals. Less offset, more comfort. Usually more of an issue in manuals that autos. I've got a DSG, so don't know if this may be a consideration or not in manual Octy's. A lot of cars that were designed to be built as left hand drive have these offsets when converted to right hand drive. One of the worst examples I've ever seen was actually going the other way from RHD to LHD in a '90's Range Rover I had for work. It was trying to realign my spine, hips, knees, and ankles every time I drove it.

perhaps this is why I feel I sit a little crooked in the seat…
Seating is such a personal thing. After ruling out a Subaru due to woeful fuel economy I was left with the choice between a mondeo and the RS. Mondeo got the flick within 5 seconds of my other half sitting in them ………

Glad it is not just me...

Still I am not complaining about that or the side bolsters, as I love the car as a whole...

BUT, sit in Golf or Polo GTI seats and see what I mean about the difference.....

Oh Kiwi you had to mention the steering wheel once someone sees that they can't unsee it. But it is a fair point. The seat issue is actually more to do with the steering wheel offset relative to the seat than the bolsters, it just causes your legs to be in a slightly odd position which makes you notice the bolsters more.

Having said that I've driven the Skoda long distances no issues, but you can use the left and right foot rest then. But I do have an issue these days with the muscles down my left leg that were not helped by it and also changing gears in the manual. It got so bad that my current car is an auto, and being a higher SUV has helped an awful lot. I'm still planning on getting either another RS or the Focus ST in a few years though when our original RS moves on.

I've recently found the vRS seats to be a little uncomfortable, though I'm probably on the larger side...

That being said, it only happens some times.
Then again, thats more me than anything else. XD

I have to say that I found the seats in my RS uncomfortable at first, more so on short trips (eg to work and back) than on longer ones. My main issues were the seat bolsters digging into my legs, the head restraint feeling like it was too far forward and lack of lumbar support. However, after just over a year of ownership most of these problems have diminished - probably my getting used to the seats, a year's worth of fiddling with adjustment and the seat material itself 'moulding' itself to my shape. In other words, the seats do seem to get better over time.
