  • Columbus Nav question

    Hey all,

Well I'm pretty new here (signed-up this morning) and I'm going to pick-up a new RS tomorrow.
Now, I've noticed while I was test-driving the car that the navigation needs a CD.

Is there any chance you can save the maps (or at least the data from the CD) on another source like the SD/HDD?

It's annoying to have the CD in there the whole time.

    Thanks for your help!!

    Lex

If there are no maps on the HDD, or the version of maps on CD/DVD is newer, you should be prompted on screen to update permanently (HDD), temporarily (via CD), or not at all, (keep using existing version on HDD). To that effect anyway. If you press Eject it tells you it's still copying the maps and allows you to watch the progress bar (if you're firmware is up to date anyway)

          Same as a computer.
When you buy a computer, its bare until you put things on it.
Put the map CD in, load all the stuff on, and its on the hard drive for life. Or until the HD dies.

              The dealership, I suppose.

Alternatively, if you're tech-savvy, you could try looking around this forum (RNS-510 is the one sold with VW cars) for newer maps/operating system installs.

I would have thought That the dealer would have loaded all your map software as part of pre delivery?

Burn the ISO at the slowest speed you can, onto a quality disc like a TDK or Verbatim (I used Verbatim, worked fine in Nero at 4X)

I updated my firmware from 27xx to 40xx with no fuss.
My available storage for music grew from 20gb to 33gb.
Got some nifty little features & enabled personal POIs.

That is strange. The original drive was 30 GB with two partitions one at 10GB for map data and one at 20 GB for music. Either you have a 30 GB drive and now no partition for data or the drive is bigger than the originally advertised 30GB which is more likely.

Our custom firmware images have been modified so that the music partition is 90% of the HDD instead of the default 75% or whatever it is, since our map data is smaller than Europe.

that's exactly wat i thought too - cause the brochure said "30gb" hdd.
however as it turns out, i have a 40gb hdd. don't know if it changed with my11 or half-way through.

here is link to post of where i discussed this earlier.

here is a pic after the firmware update. this is after loading the v5 maps on to the hdd.

Funny after my upgrade yesterday I couldn't even see this menu you're showing.

Also it stuffed up a lot of things in my car:
                              - My navigation didn't show up in the MFD anymore
                              - My steeringwheel controls didn't work
                              - When I started the car this morning, everything worked again but the steeringwheel controls were all over the place :-S
