Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MY11 RS value

    Hi All,

A change of circumstances means I will be terminating the lease on my RS soon, and need to assess whether I hand it back, or buy it from the lease company and sell it.

It's an MY11, rego'd 2/2011, 147TSI wagon, manual, race blue, with standard satnav of course, sunroof, window tint, MDI, roof bars, 32,000km and in excellent virtually unmarked condition.

I'm thinking it's private sale value is probably around $31-32k. Would be keen to get the opinion of other's on this too.

And if anyone is looking for a manual race blue wagon, it'll likely be for sale in October.

    Thanks, Damien

In my experience if you have it under lease and it's only one or thereabouts years in you are likely to be way, way upside down (car industry term for somebody who owes more than their car is worth).
The VERY FIRST thing you need to do is get a payout figure from the lease company. The value of the vehicle is totally irrelevant until you know the payout. It's possible that if you have taken a long lease and only been in the vehicle a short time that the payout today may even be more than the original purchase price of the vehicle.

Thanks, but already have the payout figure, hence I'm just checking values to make sure it's worth my while. I always structure my leases to make sure I don't get into negative equity.

One of the way to get a feel of the market price is get it assessed by auction house. Try Vehicle Auctions, Car Auctions, Online Auction - Pickles Auctions Australia. They specialize in maximizing the sale price of leased cars. They will give you an estimate range of your car value based on their recent sales figure. I've sold 2 cars through them and in my experience the final sales price is pretty close to their high estimate rather than low estimate, although those 2 cars were Hondas an resale value are expected to be high.

It's a free service and is obligation free. So if you are not happy with their estimate you don't have to sell your car through them. But it should give you a more accurate market price than redbook or glass's guide, and certainly more accurate than our opinion here in this forum. We are all Skoda owners, and we all think our car worth a million. So we might over estimate. But we are not the ones that will buy your car. It's the general public out there. IMHO, price your car at 10% higher than Pickle's high estimate. That should be reasonable for a private sale.

If anyone is looking for an RS wagon, mine is up for grabs. Otherwise I'll be handing it back to the lease company at the end of October. I do have the option of buying it, so if someone wants it I can purchase it and on-sell.

It's an MY11 147TSI, manual wagon. Built 12/10, first reg 2/11. So it's just gone 18 months old. It's race blue, with sunroof, MDI, tint and roof cross bars, 32,000kms. Car is in virtually unmarked condition, barring a couple of stone chips. Windscreen will be replaced for roadworthy. Vic rego till 2/13, and warranty until 2/14. Full service history at Richmond Skoda, and has had the 30k service.

$31,000 firm, which basically covers my costs.

Makes no difference to me if I hand it back or sell it, so just offering here in case someone wants it.
