  • Globe type for vrs

Had my drivers side low beam headlight die today. Checked the manual is it's a h7 globe but there are different types/ brightness combinations. Can anyone assist to be more specific as I don't want two different globes installed.

    Thanks in advance

    Ben

Ps. Would it be covered by warranty?

Generally, the best practice is to always replace bulbs as a pair. This is done as it's likely that the other one will fail within a short distance or time, as well as avoiding different levels of light output.

You can then store the working one in your car as a spare emergency bulb.

    Unlikely.
Bulbs are considered consumables, which are not covered under warranty - by any vehicle manufacturer.

Cheers for the quick reply. What bulb type would be recommended?

        Get a couple of 55W H7 +30% brightness bulbs.

Typically Narva or SCA/Repco etc branded.
        They'll work great.

I, myself, have defaulted back to my 55W H7 Narva Platinums.

DIY: $5 for bulb from SCA.

Getting the headlight section out is a PITA, but apart from that its all good.

That sounds weird. Both going at the same time? Could be a co-incidence but I would first check fuses or relays before changing bulbs.

More likely a fuse that a bulb. Think it through.

I do agree that its quite weird that both have gone at the same time. Unfortunately I'm not mechanical minded at all but thanks for the suggestion.

Had a quick look through the owners manual and it appears that that there are separate fuses for front and left lights - dont suppose someone could confirm that I'm looking at the right thing?

                          Pg 212
F16 - Central control unit, right main headlight, right rear light unit
F26 - Central control unit, left main headlight, left rear light unit

My highbeams are definitely working and AFAIK, the rear lights are also working - both of which appear to operate from the same fuses?

Also, if they are indeed 2 separate fuses, then it still makes it a bit unusual that both lights/fuses have gone at the same time.

Yes, a fuse is unlikely if they are separate for left and right. I would then look for a relay. I'm not sure where the relays are on the Octavia, as they would probably be in a different position to my Superb.

Generally, relays are in a plastic box in the engine compartment, with a clip off type lid. They usually have a series of relays in a row that do different jobs and may be co-located with some high current fuses.

Usually the relays are all the same part number. If you swap the one for "low beam" or such for another of the same part number, it could remedy your situation or you may have to take it an auto electrician.

Of course it still doesn't rule out the fact that both your low beams have carked it at the same time....

                              HID bulbs, or halogens?

If halogens, buy a new one for $5 and swap it out, see what happens. If it now works, then you can go ahead and change the other one, and all is well.
If not, then it might be time for a visit to the dealership service department.
