  • We all know Skodas are rattle free...

But there are quite a few that aren't including mine. Briskoda has plenty of tales of various noises intruding, and I have been trawling the net as well as experimenting in an attempt to cure some of mine. I seem to have got the numbers down over time, so thought I would pass on the info for any fellow sufferers. Some were there from new, the others were very helpfully added by dealers in the course of other work. Thanks for that...

There are 2 different rattles from the LHS of the dash. One is well known and is cured by removing the cover on the left end of the dash then tightening all bolts and screws in sight. The second is higher up, might be the demister panel contacting whatever is underneath, tends to disappear as the car warms up. One or two people have reported padding between the panel and the LHS A pillar trim helps, though I'd be a little cautious as some of the later models deploy the curtain airbag from the A pillar. You can tell as the airbag symbol is only on this pillar, not the others. If you do put something in there, I'd make it very soft so it can't interfere with deployment in any way. I am still chasing this - it's the last on the list, so any other ideas welcome.

The spring in the dashboard sunglasses holder can rattle in sympathy with engine revs. A (VW) dealer pretty much fixed that with double sided tape applied near/around the spring. Skoda dealers not helpful at all on this one; yes, "they all do that".

After my handbrake blind was replaced, the console had a fidgety squeak/buzz over lots of bumps. I realigned the side panels slightly, butting them up more tightly to the console assembly. Seems to have worked.

Taligate rattle there from day one, dealers seemingly deaf and or incapable of fixing this one. Unable to convince them to adjust the striker, went on forever. In the end, I tried white lithium grease sprayed on the hinges and silicone lube on the weatherstrip. Silent. Don't know which did it, suspect the silicone.

Headlining around the overhead lighting creaking. Fiddle with the alignment of the plastic components a little, or in some cases may need to drop one of these out as it can be a wire tapping on the plastic. Realign the offending wire if so.

I was also getting a resonance at low revs (1.9 TDI), Skoda dealers again knew nothing. VW dealer picked it right away as the air box, apparently extremely common. Insulated the air box and instant cure. Anyone with a 1.9 suffering this ask your local VW dealer if they know this trick.

And oh yeah, stupid City Link eTag was buzzing away, had me for a while thinking I would never find it. Loose in the mount - repositioned it.

Part of my route to work has stretches seemingly built specifically to provoke rattles in cars, so I've had time to seek these suckers out.

Can't think of any others at the moment, but feel free to add for the benefit of all.

    Good advice!

Another thing to avoid is window tinters who remove the interior door panels to apply the tint. Every door panel of mine has rattled since it returned from the window tinting guys Northsore Skoda use... I'm pretty sure they broke something in every door when attempting to remove them, but I'm too scared to look

Now I just turn up my music.

My Golf has had an annoying rattle on the left side of the dash (on rough-bitumen freeways) so I may try out your first tip. I always thought it was the glovebox.

      Thanks

If the Golf is like the Octavia, the end 'cap' has a screwdriver slot to lever it off. It's held in by clips and locating lugs. I found mine came off with fingernail pressure only and a bit of wiggling. Underneath are a fair number of torx screws and 1 large nut. Some can be a bit tricky to reach. Some people advocate loosening off the screws a little then holding the dash in tight while re-tightening the screws. Need 2 people for that of course.

I also saw some people who felt it was the cover itself, or where the window demister vent outlet in this panel meets the matching rubber grommet in the door. Most seem to fix this with silicone spray.

        Hope it works, hate rattles.

Yeah I've had the other end off to access the fusebox and run microphone (bluetooth) and reversing camera cables when retrofitting. Surprised I haven't added any rattles with the amount of stuff that's been added to my car.

Leave it in the storage space on top of the dash. Works perfectly and doesn't make the car look hideous.

With the door panels, the clips that are used to hold the panels on are quite brittle. I know from experience that its just about impossible (at the very least impracticable) to remove a door trim panel without breaking a couple.

I'm sure you can get them from the dealer, but they are generic and you can buy packets of them at supercheap for a few dollars for 5.

Last time I removed a trim panel, I broke 3 on one side and 2 on the other.

I had a similar problem, turned out to be the way I'd placed my sunnies in the sunglasses holder.

Haha, finally a decent use for that compartment. I've got the newer/smaller/less ugly version that's already stuck out of sight behind my mirror so I'll probably keep it there.

I keep my sunnies in the compartment near the light swtich.

Yep, what Ryan_R said. I have the little one, kept out of sight behind the mirror. For some reason it didn't pick up the signal properly when I tried the compartment K1W1. Maybe the old ones are better at sending/receiving?

So be warned those with the new eTag, it can rattle and might drive you nuts til you realise that's what is doing it. The rattle reflects off the screen and dash, and sounds like it's coming from "somewhere". Give it a tweak and it will shutup.

Zero rattles. Well, except the drink bottle and torch in passenger door. Kinda surprised, actually.

We should start a 'what do you keep in your 500 various compartments thread' (although this is sort-of turning into one). My door pocket has a small umbrella and a couple of DVDs for the RNS510. VCDS cable might be hidden in there too atm. Better take it out before people start looking for me.

I've found the rear door panels rattle in the wagon. The dealer fixed the passenger side as it was noticeably louder than the right.. but it seems it's where the pocket meets the rest of the door skin.. it's not moulded to it but just sits up against it.. A little volume with bass and it seems to rattle.. I've got the fader to the rear a bit.. and the bass is one step above middle.. Anyone else notice this?

Other than that ours doesn't have any rattles.. At it's first service the other week at Bryan Byrt at Mt Gravatt I managed to get the waste gate rattle sorted without any hassles!

I have had both the old large and new small etags in my car and they both work from inside the top dash storage compartment on both Citylink and Eastlink. I have also used my tags in the compartment in loan Skodas and they have worked in those cars.
The trick is that the tag must be oriented correctly. The side that normally faces the windscreen must be up when the tag is inside the storage compartment.
