Skoda Octavia1.9 TDI turbo boost problem

My skoda has done 90000km and the turbo boost is cutting out. Have had a bottom hose replaced but have now been advised that the problem is the turbo itself. I've been told that this can be replaced for $4000 Could it possibly be something else causing this? Anyone, any ideas?

Yikes! 4 grand... I hope not for your sake (or mine since I have this engine). I had a lower intercooler hose replaced due to an apparent leak, but without major symptoms.

If Gavin can't help, I'd suggest casting the net fairly wide in terms of a forum search. This engine was used in multiple VW, Skoda and Audi (maybe Seat too?) products over a long period of time and there will be a wealth of information about it out there.

Also, if it is replacement and the quote was from a dealer I'd consider looking to an independent and an alternative source for the part.

Second hand and refurb start from about $300 AUD on UK fleabay. Getting most of them to ship here could be tricky though. Then again you might source used or refurb here, from a VW/Skoda wrecker or specialist. What you do kinda depends on how long you plan to keep it, but $4k on a car that's worth what, $15-17 private sale or much less as a trade is a lot.

Get one from OS. Turbos do go early sometimes... Suggest taking it to a euro turbo specialist rather than dealer...

Contact transporter (Miro) on this forum. He should be able to diagnose your issues & provide a quality job for a fair price (he isn't cheap but if you pay peanuts then......).

I agree with BluChris 4 Grand is a lot of money. It looks like it'll be better to go independent rather than a dealership. I was intending to keep this vehicle for the long haul after hearing all the good reports anout skoda but am now wondering anyway need to fix the problem so will continue to research. Will see what Transporter has to say.

Keep us posted skoda08. I'm with you. Intended to keep the car long term but recently started to wonder. Have had only minor issues but am unimpressed with servicing and especially repair costs as well as lack of convenience in arranging service. I also don't like being forced down a particular servicing path because dealers want to charge the earth. Have never felt this way before, used dealers for decades with other brands.

Apples and oranges I know but my wife's (expletive deleted) Yaris is same age and mileage as the Skoda, has never, ever cost more than $350 for servicing and absolutely no repairs in 5 years. Dealer is walking distance from home, only has the car for short periods of time to service. Skoda never less than $350 and usually much, much more and minor repairs creeping in, no-one nearby, too many long days servicing and need for repeat visits etc. Always knew the Skoda would be at a premium but still...

ive done plenty of turbo changes on different motors, not a VAG motor, but 4k seems like a LOT with or without labour.

Not the new turbos, probably rebuild and with dodgy warranty.

Yes, that's what I think as well. I will see the car in next week or two and we will keep you posted.

Also there is a little known fault in some of the tdi wiring looms which can give false pressure readings, thus thinking the car is overboosting and cutting it out.
Dealers had no idea with my vrs when it was doing it, i have to trawl the net and tech bulletins to find it.
Loom was only about 65 bucks but the labour was 3 hours. I bought the part and told them if it didnt fix it i would pay.

Yaris service schedule 6 months 10,00km vs Skoda 15,000km 12 months? Apples and Oranges indeed.

KM wise we do about the same, and yes in theory the Yaris is twice as often but in reality it ends up being about 2/3 the time. Also, minor dealer servicing is well under $300, only the more major to date have been over. If we'd bought it a year or so later it would have come with $130 fixed price servicing too. I can promise you the cost of ownership of the Yaris is way lower regardless of service intervals, got the bills to prove it. And the ease of servicing is incomparable.

Do I want a Toyota? No. Do I want a better service deal from Skoda? Hell yeah.
