Problem there mate is that for the spiritual concept of karma, i.e. "What goes around comes around", to be involved we would need to accept that our damaged cars must be the result of ill deeds that we've perpetrated on others, either in this, or in a previous life. That's why rather than hope that karma catches up with the woman that not only dented my door, but looked me in the eyes with a smile on her face before driving off leaving me the time and expense of making it right, in effect stealing from me, my inner serenity would be better restored were I to find her car unattended in a car park where I could then exercise the human concept of revenge, i.e. "Don't get mad, get even".

Hey guys, your support has been overwhelming and I thank you all for the support. Unfortunately it seems that my luck is gone from bad to worse with me having an accident this morning whilst driving home from work after a night shift. Worse part about it was I was literally only a couple streets away from home when it happened and that we are now down to only 1 useable car when we need 3 so its gonna be a problem with transport. Fortunately though my bumblebee is fine as it wasn't being driven but rather my second car, the Holden Cruze. Fortuantely cars are built to a high standard these days and I managed to walk out with out a scratch and maybe only some minor aches and the tremor of being in shock. Weird thing is, none of the airbags activated so maybe the impact wasn't bad enough to require their cushioning.
As for the door damage to the bumblebee, I'll have to get that fixed at some point however in terms of karma to the person that damaged my car without leaving a note of details, I just see it as "I must've owed them something in my previous life and hence they're now taking back what I owed them hence paying my dues in a different form". Kinda like how I see fines, I just take it as the need to pay more tax. I know it sounds like denial but at least it helps me to calm down and feel better about the situation.

Sorry to hear about the bingle, but glad that there's no injuries. Odd about the airbags. I watched a car go into a concrete stormwater channel, about a 1.8m drop, last Friday. The guy had been rammed from behind by a stolen car while stopped at an intersection. He told me he had just taken his foot from the brake and was about to drive off when he was shunted across the street, up onto the footpath, and through a flimsy fence into the canal. The guy was OK, but had cuts on his head 'cause the airbags didn't deploy.
About the airbags.
I went into a wooden fencepost (huge treated wood farm-style gate post) in the Rio, at around 30km/h. Bent the radiator and ripped the post out of the ground. Impressive 1ft square hole where it used to be. Airbags didn't deploy.

it might b due to the fact that the car was shunted while stationary. this won't trigger the airbags.
this may have contributed to the airbags not deploying after flying into the canal.

Even so, I would've thought diving nose first off a near 2m drop, and coming to a dead stop when hitting the concrete bottom of the canal wouldn't be all that different from driving into a wall, or another car.

Re the airbags - deployment is a speed/impact force thing. They aren't designed to trigger at lower speeds (not needed) and if the impact force is not in the right direction (e.g. front airbags don't go off if you are hit in the back or side)

I understand what you're saying, and I'm not being argumentative, it's just my nature to comment that the number of stitches in the guys head would seem to indicate that they were needed.
No problem. Not needed is a relative thing. If you get punched in the face by an airbag you're likely to be black and blue. They ain't gentle, but prevent serious injury. So they don't go off until the serious injury threshold is theroretically met.
There's a ton of other variables too. Manufacturers don't always get it right, for e.g. Nissan recalled the Navara because NCAP testing revealed the bags were triggering too late to be effective. The VS Commodore driver's bag deployed but didn't provide a stable platform for the driver's head (like many cars). Many Chinese airbags are like putting lipstick on a pig - the cars have often been structurally poor and airbags make little difference. And on it goes. Could also be plain bad luck - right on the threshold for triggering but not quite enough.

Thanks for the responses guys. I was doing a little reading and searching making comparisons (although only estimates of amount of actual impact and speed via comparing amount of damage similar to that of ours) and it seems that all others I found pics of at the salvage yards all had their airbags deployed. There was one that had very similar damage to ours but a bit less severe and even that had its airbags deployed.
So was mine faulty or did one of the following below happen?
From reading, its also a possibility that the airbag sensor was triggered but didn't end up deploying the airbags for several with some being:
1. the wire was severed during the accident (somehow) from the impact.
2. the sensor was triggered and made the trip to the airbag unit but for some reason the unit failed to deployed.
3. somewhere down the line of servicing/inspections the connections may have been touched or disconnected for diagnostic or other purposes and not reconnected properly.
4. the airbag system or sensor was faulty
And the list goes on.
But I guess, at the end of the day, if it wasn't needed then it wasn't needed since i'm not hurt (apart from being knocked about and just sore here and there). I guess the airbags could've made things worse if they weren't required.
generally airbags will deploy only during deceleration, and it must be over a limit. sometimes hitting a hard object may never deploy an airbag the object wasnt hit either hard or fast enough to decelerate beyond the preset threshold.
i think only very early model cars equipped with airbags had a loop in the front bar to signal deployment. now cars use a g-force sensor (in the middle of the car - where it cant be damaged easily) to signal the airbag to deploy.
if an airbag is signaled to deploy and doesnt, youll get an error. if it detect a missing airbag, youll get an error too.
