  • Clutch Question

    Guys,

I received a phone call from my wife this afternoon saying that she was having problems with the car. What I can gather from her brief description was that she would have been riding the clutch in traffic going up a long hill and it started to slip.

By the time I got to the car 30 mins later and it had cooled down - the car drove fine. I really gave it some curry and the clutch wasnt slipping at all.

Therefore, is it possible the clutch can heat up enough to slip and then cool back down to work without wrecking the clutch? Or is it now just a time bomb waiting to go off? The car is only 2 years old and I never ride the clutch and for the most part when I am in the car with my wife, she doesnt ride the clutch badly.

Are there any known issues with VW clutches in this generation of cars? I really dont want to buy a DSG next time around.....

Did she report any smell? To be slipping after "riding" the clutch, she would have had to be giving it a few revs for quite a period of time to get so hot (how big was that hill???) and she would have most likely been able to smell it also..
I avoid slipping the clutch as much as possible although there have been the odd fast take-offs which require a little slipping. I have never experienced anything but solid drive when the clutch is out.

She could smell it and that was how I knew it was the clutch. The hill is about 400m long and she was in solid traffic. I too have never had an issue with the clutch at all. I drove it home from work and all was perfectly normal.

I let my GF drive the vRS to the supermarket and back once, a thing I hate due to car parks. When she got back she complained about a funny smell. I went out to see the rear brakes smouldering, she hadn t fully released the hand brake. Last time she gets to drive it.

Sounds like you need to change the GF.

I'm about to go to Lorne for a work conference. My boss always books these massive new houses built up there on steep blocks that we have to drive up and back to. When my RS was about 3mths old I went there as per usual for work and drove down the driveway, got halfway down it and then my workmates wanted us to come back up, there was no way to turn around so had to reverse. I put the handbrake on, and to get enough bite and revs to make it up backwards I had to give it a fair bit, I only backed up about 10min but the smell from my new cars clutch in such a short time made me cringe....unfortunately there was no way around it...I reversed in the rest of the week and no issues with that.
