Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Potential RS Wagon owner with some questions :)

    Hi guys,

About to do a deal on a RS MY10 147 wagon and fingers crossed I'll know tomorrow. Just want to check a few things.

The dealer told me it's the exact same engine as the MK6 GTI TSI (?) whereas when i contacted the people who will do the revo tune they told me it was a MKV GTI FSI?

So which one is it and is it a TSI, FSI or TFSI? (lol)

The same for the chassis-MK6 or MK5? Also is the suspension from the GTi as well?

last question are the wheel specs for the RS 18x7, et 51, 5x112 centre bore 57.1?

Thanks heaps guys and as soon as I get it I'll post some pics.

    Cheers
    Ando

It has a timing chain rather than a belt, so it is the same as the mk.6 GTi.

the facelift rs has an EA888 CCZ TSI engine - just like the mk6 golf gti. only difference is the engine software callibration. the gti comes with version B (155kW, engine code = CCZB), while the RS comes with version A (147kW, engine code = CCZA).

i believe the chasis is still mk5 pinnings.

      wheels are 18x7.5.

Suspension is a good question, it probably is still the Mk5 as the engine was snuck in without much notice. The again they could have done the same with the suspension. It would be weird for them to wait for the next update to change the other bits to Mk6 when they did it with everything else though.

The software map irks me as well, VW were getting ancy about Skoda stealing sales but really putting the same software on wouldn't steal sales as the GTi is an entirely different car. I think the new Octavias will look nice but I do have concerns that VW are going to push for them to be more basic not as big anymore and that will mean SKoda here won't be able to market them as a premium car anymore.

I'm planning in my head to get another RS when my current car is up and our pre FL will be due to go, but hard to say what the landscape will be like then, it may be post Falcon/Commodore..

Thanks woofy, dark shadow and antiplastix!!!

The deal is done and I'll be picking up over the weekend.

Another question if I can-tunes. If its the EA888 is it likely that this car has the med17 ecu that is encrypted requiring removal of ecu to tune it-anyone the ecu model in the RS?

Thanks guys sorry if this question has been asked before.

          Cheers

congrats gents, good to see the vRS family growing

Ando I can confirm that the encrypted ecu (I have one) is no big deal re tuning. I'm fairly(?) certain that it doesn't get removed, just temporarily placed in some sort of boot mode to allow the tech to read the encryption code, after which it's business as usual.

There is apparently a limitation with the ecu due to lack of space, encryption, or both, in that it doesn't allow custom tunes as per FSI engines which allow individual parameters to be tweaked left right and center. This is certainly not the most technical answer you'll get, but for this ecu it's more a case of the tuning process enabling various RON multipliers. Note, the first multiple is bloody awesome, hehe

                  His mate,

Love your Skoda! Been following your build thread, so cool what ur doing to it .

So does that mean no recode/Parso tune for this car? Do you guys know which of the off the shelf tunes are plug n play?

                  Thanks again

thanks Ando, I'm looking forward to your pics and plans - bet you're excited .

I'm pretty certain no Parso-style tune is do-able .. for now anyway. All major brands, and even the custom tuners, should have stage 1/2/3/etc style maps available for the car (just no fancy shmancy custom maps) .. and as I understand it (or not) the main difference with the maps is what RON fuel the ecu is told to think is being used.

                    Cheers,
                    Todd.

ok so I followed up with my tuner and apparently I am full of shyte, have memory and/or listening problems that are yet to be resolved, I have outsourced too many of my brain functions to my iphone, or all of the above

just goes to show, don't always believe what your read on forums, hehe

now for a little bit of factual correctness:

                    - my MY12 vRS DOES have the TSI MED17 ecu

                    - it is NOT encrypted (confirmed 100%)

                    - it does NOT have boost, fuel and timing adjustability unlike the MED9 ecu (FSI - mk5 gti and mk6 R)

                    - it DOES have switchable functionality, allowing one of several RON fuel tunes to be used at any time

                      HI Todd,

Thanks for your reply and your pm mate! I really appreciate the info. You are right that they are not enrypted so it looks like plug n play is a go. I actually got in touch with Mark from Recode and he said he can do a tune for it as well -probably not the sort of tune as you have said that he could do on an R but at least a custom one with dyno before and after.

Today was supposed to b pick up day but thanks to the bank it'll be Monday oh well a day off work hopefully.

Cheers Todd and thanks again for your help
                      Ando
