New Nexen tyres fitted

On Saturday I drove to Bendigo to get new tyres fitted by a mate of a mate. He (my mate ) has Nexen p6000 on his Supra and Aurion and recommended them. They were $180 ea for 225/40R x 18 and I can't fault them.
They Feel better than the sport maxx gt that came off after 26k after really bad feathering because of bad wheel alignment. I was sceptical because I have never heard of Nexen tyres but buying a škodw has taught me not to be a brand snob.
So if anyone is thinking of buying tyres soon I recommended Nexen p6000

Geeze 26k.....Mines done nearly 40k and has heaps of tread and grip left. My mate with one slightly older than mine who has done over 50k has the same tyres and also has heaps left. I think it was just the lucky buggers who bought in the first year that got the Michelin PE2s, but they have been awesome tyres.

20k out of my Dunlops Sport Maxx and glad to see the crappy , NOISY, things go. They ve got to be one of the noisest tyres I ve ever had.

Thats why we replaced the noisy, they were 2-3 mm from the wear indicators.

Hmm maybe the Dunlops are a hit and miss really. Mine weren't anywhere near as noisy as other s have stated however in saying that, it can be quite subjective. Either that or maybe I'm used to the course road noise driving up to Bendigo.

more likely its the alignment than the tyres varying from car to car.

anyone getting new tyres, have a search around on briskoda and the like to find the alignment settings for all 4 wheels and get a place like pedders to do a 4 wheeler. Turns out there have been quiite a few revisions on alignment by skoda.

My car (an 07) has pretty bad tyre noise and its definaly alignment related, as I've swapped rims/tyres to no avail. That, and I can literally see that on the rear I have more than -1degree of camber, and the setting for the rear should be -50minutes +-5 minutes.

Anyway, I also have the nexens in 17" and they are very good.

There are plenty of threads both here and on Briskoda about issues with the Dunlops. The last I heard Skoda had stopped fitting then supposedly because of customer complaints.
Mine lasted 36k and were replaced when I got a slow leak in one (nail) and took it in to get repaired. When they put the car up on the jacks it was pretty obvious that even though they weren't at the wear indicators they were shot. I've been driving nice and quietly on Kuhmos for the last 10,000 kms.

Is there any reviews on how they hold up once a few km's are on the Nexen's? I know when i ran Nakangs on my vito van, the first set were good, but the 2nd & 3rd sets were good initally but I got down to about 2/3 worn and they went out of shape and even had one delaminate.
I'll be in the market for a new set of tyres in about 3-5k time ( currently on Dunlop Sport Max at 47k - I had my wheel alignment sorted early on) and I've been looking at the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymetric 2's, they're getting really good write ups/reviews but are on the expensive side. Have noticed the local shops are doing deals now that isn't too far off what i could get tyres from tirerack.com with delivery so I think I'd go local unless tirerack has a special sometime soon.....

Hey mate, i too am looking into getting new 18" tyres and would like to know where the deals are for good years? is it individual tyres outlet pricing or is it a national good year offer?

One of my mates ordered 225/40x18 from Tirerack for his RS yesterday. He's in CBR -USD900 for 4 tyres + USD260 delivery. He's thinking it will come out at ~AUD1150. The local jax will fit & balance for $80

IIRC, the Goodyear F1A2 were about USD180 each. A set of 4 should come in at ~AUD1050 delivered, fitted & balanced

I did a quick search last night for any aussie specials on goodyear tyres and nothing. So still cheapest to get them from tire rack.

My memory is awful, but for customs is it the total price including shipping or the price before shipping?

price before shipping costs. They can take the Australian component of the freight into account but I can't see that they'd bother working it out unless Gerry harvey was running the customs office .

Shipping to Australia: A Fact Sheet

Information about Customs, GST, Duties and shipping to Australia contained herewith.

General Rule of Thumb
The rule of thumb to follow when ordering parts/items from overseas is that if you pay less than $1000AUD (the Customs Value - CV)) for the items exclusive of shipping, you will not pay duty and GST.

If your items are over $1000AUD, then you may be subject to GST and duty. Some members have received items that have been valued over $1000AUD and have not paid GST or duty; it is the luck of the draw. However, you are more than likely going to be stung with GST and duty.

Calculation of Value
Australian Customs may calculate the value of your items using a number of methods. Usually, you will not have to worry about any of the methods as your parts will usually contain an invoice with the amount that you paid for it from the vendor. This will suffice for Customs.

Internal and External Shipping
The exception to the general rule of thumb is shipping. Any costs associated with transport from the vendor to Australian shores is not included in the valuation of goods.

However, costs associated with transport inside Australia are included in the valuation of goods. The costs won't be much, but if you are edging towards $1000AUD then one of the following procedures may save you a large amount of money.

Splitting Shipments and Multiple Shipments
Some people think that it may be worth splitting shipments (ie: four tyres in two separate packages). You should be aware that Customs will combine packages sent from the same vendor to the same addressee and calculate them as one package.

One technique to get around this is to have the vendor list your business as the recipient as one, and your home as the recipient of the other. Customs may also check the name and vendor, but they are unable to combine the packages and treat them as one as Duty laws require the addressee and the vendor to be the same.

All you are doing here is avoiding the 'gotcha' clause that Customs have by having two different addresses.

Example of Duty - How is Duty and GST Calculated?

The Import Duty for your goods is calculated as a percentage of the price you paid for goods (CV). While some rates differ (tobacco, liquor etc.), the majority of goods attract a 5% duty rate.

Then, GST is calculated at 10% (normal rate) of the Value of the Taxable Import (VoTI). The VoTI is calculated by the addition of the Customs Value (CV) PLUS the Duty PLUS the value of the International Transport and Insurance (T&I).

An example of how the duty and GST is calculated on goods valued at AUD$1,500 which attract a 5% duty rate would be:

If the Customs value (CV) of your tyres = $1,500.00
Then the Customs Duty @ 5% of the $1,500 (CV) = $75.00 (Payable)
Assuming the international transport and insurance (T&I) = $125.00
Then the VoTI = (CV) + Duty + (T&I) = $1,700.00
GST = 10% of the VoTI = 10% x $1,700 = $170.00 (Payable)
Therefore the Total Duty plus GST payable = $245.00
