glovebox thingy - wat is it?

can anyone tell me wat this is?
it's on the top right inside of the glovebox.



i'm looking at removing my glovebox soon (to install my 9wz bluetooth unit), but i was unsure of this bit.
wat does it do?
i heard there is an airbag switch that can be used to turn off the passenger airbag - is that wat this is?

i'm comfortable with how to remove the glovebox, just not sure about this thing.

its meant to be a cooler when you run aircon on and have the vent open i guess to keep a can of drink or maybe those chocolates from melting in the heat....

Bear in mind there is a pipe running from that vent to the heater case so that cooler air can get in.
Can I ask why you're removing the glovebox to install bluetooth?

It has the same function as that little bit with the ring on top that lifts up inside the centre console compartment.

tis too much hassle to route the wiring to under the driver's or passenger's seat.
tis not hardly any room behind the rns unit.
tis not much room behind the climate controls.

on the passengers side, u can pop the side cover off to reveal the inside of the dash next to the glovebox. there is wat appears to me a nice spot for the bluetooth module with room for the wiring loom. the advantage of putting it here is that i can get access the bluetooth at anytime by simply popping off the side cover.

however to put it there in the 1st place, i need to remove the glovebox so i can slot the bluetooth module in.

will take pics when the time comes to install. u'll c wat i mean. i'm waiting on the bluetooth wiring harness to arrive.

if i put it behind the rns or climate control unit, it will b a pain getting to it, if the need ever arises.
under the seat will b a pain to route the wiring & i'll need to get the mounting brackets and/or foam holder.

Sounds reasonable. I know you've been doing your homework on this. I'm thinking this would be handy if you needed to change the module for any reason, but to troubleshoot, or upgrade in the future you'd still need to pop the trim and undo the four screws retaining the Colombus unit anyhow in order to have enough clearance to remove the main connector block off the back of the Colombus, no?

the idea is not to have to get to the back of the rns unit if i ever needed to troubleshoot or replace the bluetooth unit in the long run, as the wiring harness will b already attached (piggy back to the rns) and the bluetooth end of the harness will b accessible through the side opening in the dash.

the wiring on the bluetooth end should b the same regardless of the unit type (9wz, 9w3, 9w7 etc etc), so theoretically, i shouldn't have to change the end on the rns end.

...though if i wanted to retrofit MDI, then i'll need to remove the rns unit to get to the quadlock - no choice there!

another benefit of me putting it there is that i can easily route the bluetooth's external gsm antenna up the passenger side a-pillar.
i've worked a sweet way of doing so without having to actually remove the a-pillar trim. u won't even realise its there

turns out there IS an airbag connection on the glovebox!!
WTF!?!?!?! why????

this based on a 2010 build vrs in the uk.

either i'm gonna have to disconnect the car battery before doing the install, or i'll have to get the airbag warning light reset by the dealer (or vcds?) after the install.
