I think I should be able to get them down $2,000 without too much trouble to start with, maybe $3000 if they are really keen...what do you think? Bearing in mind the 'penality' DDelivery we pay up here. I think it's around $1500 - $2000 more than Brisvegas etc but not certain.

That's standard.
When I got my Caddy, there was a special deal negotiated between Engineers Australia and VW that saw the dealer refunded the discount of 50%.
But yes, you need to try and get a bigger discount.
First, make sure you are not missing out on any group/association/company discount arrangement with VW Australia. It costs the dealer nothing and you would be surprised how many dealers bother to find out. They say it is up to the buyer.
Next, if you are getting a drive-away deal, push for that "kickback" from the CTP insurer (usually Allianz) to be passed on in full. On my Caddy the drive-away discount was $2,910. The CTP insurer does this as in the main, most owners renewtheir CTP with the same insurer without checking as the price is essentially regulated.
So, yes, it should be more like $45,000 than just under $50,000.
Go in knowing why it should be lower.
Oh yes, one more thing. It all depends on when you approach the dealer. If there is a "sale" on, then it will be more difficult. Just after a sale, and sales reps find they are getting no sales and so are prepared to offer better discounts. Also, the middle to end of the month is a better, particularly if sales have been poor as sales reps need to close sales to get paid.
Do not be afraid to walk even if there is just one dealer.
Ultimately they have the car and you have the money so sales are irrelevant. If you do not buy now, you still have your money, but they have a car they still need to sell. If they do not sell, then many have to pay on the finance for it.
+1 for the Yeti - based on dog count.
We have a Scout (upgraded from a Forester Turbo - and yes it was an upgrade) fantastic, solid ride ideal for 5 adults + boot full of stuff. Room for a Malamute or two in the back but not the same space as you are after.

PS. Oh and we sprung for the HID package, no regrets.

The costs were for the below options. I have now decided to go without the Xenons having driven a vehicle with them on the weekend. They are brighter close in, but do not have the penetrating distance I want. Getting the Scout now comes down to whether they will fit spotties on that uni bar (thanks IBN) and a nice price. If not, then I will look to the ASX, CRV or back to the Tiguan. I don't think it will be a problem just from having spoken to the dealer but will have to get it confirmed and put on the contract.

Ordered 07 May 14 (Wk 15), Built Wk 37, Loaded 27/9 (wk 39), Docked 12/11 (wk 46), DELIVERED! 12/12 (end of wk 50 - 7 months + 1 week).
I know that you can get the cables cheaper on the net but the fact is the dealers do not tell people that the MDI by itself is useless. In 2011 when you can by a $15,000 car with a USB interface its criminal that VW charge several hundred dollars for MDI PLUS more money for cables for what is in effect a propriety USB just because the Germans are too bloody minded to admit that they got it wrong by not using an international standard interface.
