  • Whiteline Anti Lift Kit fitted - Freakin' Awesome!!!

    Hi all,

I fitted the Whilteline Anti Lift Kit to my FL VRS on the weekend.

    Wow!

My car now steers like my previous Honda Accord Euro.
    Absolutely love it!

First time I noticed it was through a roundabout where there wasn't that understeering scrub towards the exit as I was steering back in. It simple turned in as I had asked.

But then, when I upped the pace on some country back roads, I had Sarah Skoda screaming on near redline, holding 100km/h through a sweeping left and holding an absolutely neutral line.
Previously through the same bend, even setting up the correct balance and maintaining throttle evenly, I would have to ease off mid corner as the understeer would slowly creep us wider and wider....

Anyway, I have some fitting instructions for anyone thinking of doing the job themselves as it is pretty quick and painless.
Total time taken was 1 1/2 hrs with me working slowly and methodically.

It comes with fitting instructions which ask you to remove the whole control arm and undo a number of other bolts and affect the positioning of the subframe but as described below, it really isn't necessary.

Instead of removing the entire control arm, requiring the replacement of a multitude of stretch bolts, I:

    Removal

Removed the 3 bolts holding the original control arm mount
Applied some degreaser to the spigot
Attached a ratchet tie down strap connected to the exhaust brace (?) under the centre of the car.
Ratcheted the strap tight a couple of turns the constant pressure popped it off.
Used a lever to tilt the contro arm down enough to remove the original bracket

    Fitting

The reverse of the above but this time using the front of the control arm as the point to hook the ratchet tie downs to pull the new bush onto the spigot.

Took it for a wheel alignment but not required as none of the original alignment bolts had been touched.
    Hope this helps!

I'm considering this mod to my car as well, just a bit concerned about the warranty with my car.
Will this kit make any changes to ride quality, too? Not sure what happened to my car but the rear suspensions started to play a bit recently.
Whenever I go over the bump or a tiny pot hole, the rear of the car feels shaking or moving side ways a bit.

That kit is supposed to give you a little more castor angle. Because of this, it's definately necessary to have an alignment done as the change in castor will affect the toe adjustment.

Does it help curb wheelspin from a standing start?

Probably the worst thing since i've come back to FWD that takes some getting used to. That and the traction control cuts in way to early - tries to not allow ANY wheelspin.

Does help a little but still spins though. Just improve but is an upgrade that's well worth it.

Don't mind the steering, but would prefer something that got rid of the above problem first ..... it can be quite violence if your not careful.

I know exactly what you mean, I've got it down pat pretty good now that I can limit wheel spin....can't just rev it up and drop the clutch lol asking for trouble!

can't wait to get this mod done

The thing that annoys me the most is the TC seems to cut in very early! My V8 calais wouldn't cut in as heavy unless it was very wet and
you gave it a bootful. In the dry it would allow a mild drift around a corner before esp/tc would straighten you up. In a straight line it would
allow some wheelspin. The skoda seems to just cut power as soon as it thinks there is a chance of wheelspin. I find if i'm worried that I have to take off fast, i turn the TC off so the car doesnt bog down. A bit more of a gap before it cuts in (grip wise) would def be appreciated.
If you don't mind....how much is the kit?

The pseudo-awd R puts a smile on my face every time I drive it, and I got more than a little shock going back to a FWD when I test drove the Octy. I've never driven such a powerful FWD as the Octy before and two things were immediately apparent - the sudden wheelspin, and the overzealous traction control. And I don't think I'll be able to hold off getting stage 1 put on for very long at all, at which point it'll really start to get interesting traction-wise.

I plan to tackle the problem by first adjusting my AWD-ruined driving style, and then one step at a time I'll try and get my new baby to show a bit more love for the asphalt at the front wheels and a little less at the back (on takeoff at least).

She docks in a week or two (probably sitting all alone right now amongst one or two gazillion Fabia's and Yeti's about to hit the dealerships) and the very first thing I plan to do is swap the stock tyres for 235/40 Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2's or Michelin Pilot Sport 3's. Then once Japan can send across my Volk 18x8's I'll find out exactly how much benefit losing 12-16kg of unsprung weight provides. After I've had time to get to know how that all feels I'll add the Whiteline castor bushings, and then once me and black beauty spend a few more fine moments together I might try and introduce what's left of my wallet to some coilovers. Then in future a couple of other options as I understand it are lighter brakes and a diff if she really starts getting all down and dirty on me somewhere between stage 2 and 3.

So it sounds like the Octy's wheelspin and TC can be tamed to various degrees (with various amounts of $$$) ... I'll make sure I comment about how she and I get on at each stage, but I've got no doubt that she's gonna be loads of fun right from the start

(edit) .. cool the old LSD's don't seem as pricey as I was having nightmares about : )

I've found the contis that come on the car are VERY good (well laterally) - I wouldn't replace them with PS3's just yet (i will once mine wear out) as there isnt a huge difference from what i understand from CS2's to PS3's maybe a 10% tops one?

Yes a torsen type diff would make a massive difference.....but for the diff and fitting how much is that? wouldn't i be better off selling it and buying a faster car to start with? I guess I want some way of making the TC cut in later, and less brutal as well as some mild mechanical enhancements (WALK kit maybe and later on better tyres)

Be very interested to hear the difference, because reviews suggest they "stick" better than the stock Conti's.

To be fair, if youre not lazy, and have a REAL clutch like I do, you can really get to power down and fast, but if you are lazy or get tripped-up by a bump or broad white line on the tar, its easy to get a big dose of tramp.

.... don't have much trouble with the traction control ..... you can almost drive "through" it and it isn't heavy.

I have a real manual also....maybe because I have extra power via bluefin? Have loads of experience getting a FWD car off the line (used to have a manual V6 mazda 626 which was quite perky) - hence why i said i turned the TC off if i knew I really needed to get away quickly. I dont seem to have many issues with tramp yet......it just seems to spin when it does.

The comments on the Octavia traction control interest me. I have had a couple of moments that were quite frankly a bit scarry. The first time it happened it I couldn't figure out what was going on. The car seemed to be stalling when I really needed it to be moving to clear an intersection I had thought that I had plenty of time to get through before the bus approaching from the side.

My wife has a Golf VI TDI DSG, and in similar circumstances it just goes as one would expect it to do. In fact, it's got a bit of attitude. I'm really hesitant to put myself in a situation where I need to give the RS "some squirt" from a standing start. I feel that I just can't rely on it to respond as I'd like it to. Anyone else feel the same?
