  • 1.9 Diesel exhaust vibration

    Hey everyone,

My car has ~96,000km on it, (I've put 5000km on it since we got it about 6 weeks ago) but ever since we got it its had an exhaust vibration at pretty much between 1150 and 1250 rpm.... definitely coming from up front, but just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue or heard its a common problem, so when I get under there to fix it I dont have to start the car and get my wife to rev then engine

I feel your pain gldgti. My 08 Ambiente TDI DSG does exactly that, has done for most of the 2 years I've had it. Now at 33,000 km. Seemed to gradually develop and now fluctuates between barely there some days and extremely annoying others. Heavy, crawling traffic is the worst. Dealers: "Noise, what noise? Resonance isn't covered by warranty (even if we did hear it). We can only reproduce it under extreme conditions. We hear it but nobody here or at Skoda knows what it is; we'll log it". All of these offered at various times, no result. PS if you trawl the VW side there seem to be Passat owners complaining about a similar phenomenon. Odd mutterings at Briskoda but I can't find anything consistent. If you come up with an answer I'll nominate you for sainthood.

it sounds to me like a heatsheild is too close to the pipe somewhere and at the resonant rpm it vibrates the pipe enough to make contact... I think i'll get under there and have a looky this weekend... trying not to work on the skoda though since thats why I bought it

If I find that its the cat core rattling around inside the chamber I'll be cutting it out thats for certain.

If I find it, I'll let you know BlueChris

One dealer did (so they said) try bending the heat shield/s to no effect whatsoever. Then again, as they seemed to have such trouble hearing what I think is a bleeding obvious noise why am I not surprised? If you identify it that would be very cool.

Hey GLDGTI I might have an answer for the mystery vibration in your Octavia 1.9 TDI. I went to my local VW dealer for a few bits and pieces and asked them to listen out for the noise in my Octavia. They believe it is the air box/duct assembly, and is a fairly common issue (in VWs at least). They insulated the air box, not sure with what as I got there at closing time so didn't linger. On the drive home - joy of joys no noise You might give this a try.

Thanks BluChris, I'm certain my vibration is the exhaust, but thanks for the tip.

I've gotta do another oil change in a week or so, so I'll probably look at it then. I havnt been bothered yet

Worth a try anyway I'd say. If you asked me at the time I would have said exhaust because the noise was not directional other than 'at the front of the car'. Hope you track yours down
