Hi Mike, The slogan was part of UK Skoda's advertising 10 or so years back to a) acknowledge that Skoda had a horrible reputation for quality, and b) to confidently say that it's now reliable. Have a look at this thread from earlier in the year. http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...und-85621.html As for the translation, yes Skoda is Czech and has lots of negative meanings. Google Translate translates "There goes a pity" (allegedly said in Czech Rep when Skodas went past) as "Tam jde škoda. škoda also means damage. Clearly the marketing department weren't consulted.Comment

The name dates back to 1869 when Emil Škoda bought the company which, back then, was an arms manufacturer (actually Škoda as in damage made perfect sense for the company then). Obviously the company is named after the owner.
Škoda Works acquired the Laurint & Klement company, originally a motorcycle manufacturer that went on to produce cars and trucks in order to expand their product portfolio. You might want to note that the company's motorcycles were considered to be some of the best in the world back in the early 1910s. This by the way explains the special edition Laurint & Klement of models, which celebrate the company's origins.
Škoda means sorrow or pity as well as damage not only in Czech but pretty much any Slavic language (I'm Polish btw), so the name is a bit of a joke all across Central and Eastern Europe where these cars were prominent in the communist times. But hey, at least it's not the Trabant...
