That's a pretty good ad! Although opening the door into the wall... Ouch!

I suppose when you don't own the car...

A bit like those in the celebrity races. Make them leave a deposit and you would see them all driving much more sedately.

Unlike the celebrity races, there is a real purpose to the way the teams drive those cars - the bikes move along quickly and the teams need to respond to their riders needs ASAP else they can really be disadvantaged. And the exposure that Skoda would get over 3 weeks is immense.

In one day races and smaller tours, the teams drive cars that they own (or are supplied by their sponsors) and these are pretty battered by the end of the season so it's not a matter of mistreatment because they just don't care.

On last night's telecast, you could clearly see the Rabobank team Skoda (or maybe Euskadel - it was orange!) had a badly crumpled nose.

I'm not sure about the marketing thinking behind showing your products being abused. In the past it's something that manufacturers have done from time to time with 4WD's (Toyota "Bugger" campaign) but I can't recall it being used for cars before.
It will be interesting to see if the ad makes it across to the other networks after the Tour de France finishes.

Now who wants to buy an ex Tour Down Under car early next year?

I think the article below explains quite well the rationale behind the decision by Skoda to make an adv based on teams torturing their vehicles.

Yep, not everyone swans about in their car, detailing it every few days. For the vast majority of drivers, they want something reliable and affordable and if it has a bit of euro flair, then that might be a bonus. The ad targets that market very well IMO (and I love the cycling aspect).

Cadel has acheived something remarkable and long overdue but for bad luck (with teams/doping by competitors/injury...)

Couldn't have said it better myself. Skoda is an everyday, unpretentious car, they're not Rolls Royce! The ad shows they can be depended on.

Reminded me of an article about Skoda design and their target market on drive.com.au:

"Skoda board of directors' member for sales and marketing Jürgen Stackmann spoke candidly at the brand's familiarisation tour in the Czech Republic about the way the brand's cars are perceived, saying the way the cars look is only a small part of the buying equation for Skoda customers.

"We're an anti-fashion statement actually," says Stackmann. "Fashion is great for two years, and then it's out of fashion.

Stackmann admits the way Skoda's cars look may not ignite some people's passions like more sleek, streamlined offerings from makers such as Kia and Hyundai, but he says the brand's focus is about getting the job done rather than being seen doing it.

"Skoda is more about being practical, it's about true comfort - it's more about the 'me' car than the 'people look at me' car," Stackmann says."

Czech car maker Skoda are unfashionable and proud of it

.......... it looks like an average car, but it really isn't !!

You're a tosser - a bike race is not the same as guys going for a ride.

I agree that "some" road cyclists (especially some of the weekend warriors) are idiots but dont put everyone in the same basket. I am a road cyclist and I try to change others by telling them off when they go through red lights and if they are riding dangerously.

We all need to chill and get along with one another.

Your comment implies that the behaviour seen in the ad is indicative of the way professional bike riders use the road all the time. That is not the case. The objectionable behaviour that you are complaining about (and which I see all too often and annoys the çrap out of me) is carried out overwhelmingly by commuters and weekend warriors. I SERIOUSLY doubt a professional cyclist would risk his/her livelyhood let alone their life behaving in an irresponsible and inconsiderate manner whilst training.

I don't think our positions are very different (if at all) but I have serious problems with the way you expressed your position in your previous post.
