Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Engine rattle?

    Hey All,

    Just picked up my demo MY11 RS 147TSI from head office a couple of weeks ago. Noticed at certain times when accelerating that i get a rattle from the engine.

    Going to book in to have looked at, just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, and if so the outcome etc?

    Appreciate it.

    Go to the golf mk6 site 236 pages on this issue , i have just got my gti , at this stage does not have it , my build was april , some with same delivery have it , also a whistle issue is on the go .

    Apparently at around 2500 revs , its not terminal just annoying .

      its a "known feature" for the new EA888 TSI engines, according to VwAG!!!
      the rattling sound is from the wastegate accuator vibrating while the turbo spools (accelerating), hence the rattle from early 2k rpm.
      here is the official technical bulletin

      as spellbound mentioned, there r hundreds of pages on this topic!!

      mine has this feature :|

      nothing u can really do, unless ofcourse u upgrade to a K04 turbo, like this ;D

        Hmmm. That turbo upgrade looks like it would solve a lot of my problems, like being late for work all the time...

          It's just waste gate flutter under full boost by the sound of it. My Caddy 1.9TDI does the same. Usually in 2nd or 3rd at peak torque (around 2500rpm). This is when the engine is most efficient, hence makes the most boost.

              Mine does it. It did not do it when I first got the car. It only developed after a few months. I note that none of the reviews I read ever mentioned the rasping/rattle... I makes me wonder if press cars are being selected to avoid noisy wastegastes.

              It is worse when the engine is cold and being driven slowly. It is right around a DSG shift point when on light throttle.

              I saw the dealer about it and while they didn't know what it was they said it was normal and would not take it any further.

              I personally find it very annoying, and detracts from an otherwise good car.
