1,500km service - oil change?

I have my 1,500km service tomorrow and dealer told me that no oil change is needed. I always thought the oil needed to be changed early on.

Should I request that they change the oil?

I'd get the oil changed - you never know what may be floating around in it since the engine was run in. A magnetic sump plug is a good idea too.

1,500 km services went out the door 10 years ago on European cars. If your dealer is telling you that you need a 1,500km service I hope that they aren't charging you for it because it's a rip off. The oil in the car from new will last 15,000 km before it needs to be changed.

It depends what is your car's production date, if it's more than 6 months old or even better, close to be 12 months old, I would demand the oil and the filter to be changed.

But, it is very unlikely that your dealer would want to change the oil, so I would go to the independent VW/Skoda specialist, just to be sure... and your dealer even doesn't have to know.

I chnaged the oil and filter in our Tiguan at 1000km.

The japs are the same. Modern engines get run in at the factory under the control of a computer, oil gets replaced after that.

What 1500km service? No such thing listed in the service handbook.

To clarify, my engine has never used oil, is quiet, smooth & gets excellent fuel economy.
I had my first oil change at 15,000km & used 502.00; next at 30,000 with 504.00; then 45,000km/504.00; 60,000km/504.00 and I recently changed oil only at 69,000km with 502.00 because I have 12 litres of the stuff sitting on my shelf & I want to use it up. I'll get the normal change done again at 75,000km with 504.00 (which is also taking up shelf space) & probably change it at 84,000km to clear even more shelf space.

Early oil change opinion is about equally divided on this forum. I can't see the point but many will tell you that a kitten will die if you don't do it early. Let's face it, you can't go overly wrong doing it early but I've yet to see anyone on this forum or others blame lack of early or frequent oil changes on some mechanical woe they might be having.

i was told - "check the oil at 1500km, if its low, come in and we'll top it up for u, otherwise we'll c u at the 1st (15,000km) service."

it is not uncommon for new engines to sometimes chew more oil in the early stages of their life. in these cases, the "1500km service" makes sense.

We are getting our car serviced for the first time on monday, and it's got 14,000kms on it. I checked the oil and only had to top it up at 7000kms, the car says its due for a service in another 17,000kms lol

here is a trick for you.put some nail polish on the sump plug and if thay change it you will see the paint missing and you know it has been done but get it done.

8600km and was a little surprised at the "Check Oil" message.
But it happened on my first true long haul drive.
Had to find 5W-30 !! Not so common at servos!
Turns out it only took near half a litre to top it up (glad I didnt buy the very expensive 5L bottle! ).
Seems like a rather small gap between Low and High, but alls good.

1,500km change? I wouldnt have thought so either.

Mine was the same - set to variable & the PD folk forgot to set it to fixed

I used to hate customers that did that. Generally they were dishonest types themselves (treat others as you would expect to be treated, etc).

Very early in my career, I had a huge barney with some a-hole that claimed I hadn't changed his oil because:

Argument 1: "The oil is still black." Well durhh. If you are too tightfisted to change the oil filter & the oil comes out of the engine like treacle then maybe it's full of rubbish & it will take a few changes & an oil filter to make it come reasonably clean.

Argument 2: "I made a mark on the sump plug & it's still in the same spot". Well durhh again.. Unless I recut the thread on the sump or the bolt, or the thickness of the washer changes, the bolt will always tighten to the same point.

First customer I ever banned from setting foot on the property.

I'll admit to never being the best mechanic in the world but I was always honest. So were 99% of the guys I worked with (the other 1% were simply lazy)

I don't hate them, I understand them. The world around us changed, I would say, as I see a lot of scams and rip offs around.

Don't you mean a 1000klm service? Well the 1000klm service is pretty much just a basic levels and pressure check. I wouldn't recommend changing the oil so early as the engine would still have run in oil from factory. Your car wouldn't even be run in properly, the service is a complimentary thing so think of it to be more like a check over just to make sure nothing is wrong from factory. It's also a good time to see if the customer has had any issues with it.

I quizzed my dealer about the first service when I took delivery. He said there's no 1500/2500 check like there used to be. He also said that the new engines can use about a litre of oil per 5000kms, and said to call in at 5000 and 10000 and ask the service boys to check and top up (for free). Just had it in a 6500 for a couple of minor warranty issues, and when I picked it up I asked the service manager about the oil, and he just said it was checked. So don't know if they added any oil.
