No what you said was "NZ has had them since 2002". What I said was NZ has had them since the 1960's. There is only 40 years difference and it goes a long way to explaining why the brand recognition in NZ is higher. NZ is a very small country and even though Skodas were rare in the 1960's, 70's and 80's they were around and people did see them and they had a reputation for being somewhat basic but incredibly strong and well engineered.
When I was working in Auckland in 1983 we had a 1970's 100L series Skoda traded. At the time we were amazed about how solid the thing was and what's more we had no problems selling it. That was nearly 20 years before 2002.

Ah so not even 5 yrs yet. That's pretty new then. Well The more people getting these skodas on the road the better and greater recognition and reputation of a great alternative to the more expensive competitors. Can't wait.

I've had my MY11 TSI RS manual wagon for two weeks now, and so far I'm mighty impressed. I'm still taking it fairly easy on the engine as it's only got 800kms on it, so am not revving it much past 4000-4500 rpm, bit I've given it a good squirt a couple of times and it goes really well. Especially impressed with the gear ratios and the torque, it'll coast along in traffic at 35-40km/h in 4th, then when you boot the throttle it picks up straight away.

For a wagon it handles really well. Very stable and flat through corners, ride quality is good, and it doesn't seem to misbehave over mid-corner bumps too much.

Build quality seems to be top notch, haven't noticed any build issues yet. And you definitely can't complain about the features for the money, it's pretty much fully loaded. My only grievance is the lack of audio controls on the steering wheel in the manual, but that's cause I've come out of a car with that feature and I'm used to it. Overall after two weeks of ownership I couldn't be happier, it's the best car I've ever owned.

Skoda does indeed represent a great alternative to the many many many Mazdas and Honda and Subarus out there, in fact one of the attractions for me was owning something that was fairly unqiue and not already owned by some other Bob on every other block.

Throw in fantastic driving dynamics, first-rate build quality, and reliability that a European marque could only have dreamed about 10 years ago and you have the makings of a car that will make you a very happy driver for a long time to come.

I'm pretty sure the Tiguan is just a mis-shapen, bad handling Golf.

                  I was looking for
                  something to suit a family,
something to carry my 8 piece drum set around,
                  something sporty,
                  something fuel efficient,
something with all typical options as standard

Not many manufacturers can some up trumps in all regards! The only choices to make are hatch/wagon, man/dsg, petrol/diesel and colour.

I was sold without a test drive and have never been happier! I bought the manual diesel and sometimes wonder if I should have bought the DSG although I have driven manuals my whole life and this is a sweet 'box.

Had my Skoda RS TDi DSG Wagon for nearly 2 years now. I normally change cars around this time (I'm a fuss pot with cars) but I just don't want to let go of it. Power, quality, handling, space & excellent economy.

A Tiguan would be a good alternate, but as other have suggested you need to decide a sporty car (more power, handling & noise) vs higher seating position, less grunt, less space, more refinement & more money.

I say the Skoda, but that's the type of car I like. Drive both one after the other and make your decision.

                    Cheers

I was looking at the Tiguan, but really the boot space is non existant, sliding rear seat or not. If you even remotely need to put anything in the back, then forget the Tiguan.

Not sure about the Tiguan cause it seemed okay to me but still doesn't compare to the sheer size of the Octavia's boot though.

I would have thought a Scout or a Yeti was more like a Tiguan than a sedan. I can vouch for the Scout, solid as a rock, extra ground clearance and now the same CR TDI engine as the Tiguan.DSG and 1.8TSI coming.

Am wondering if it's possible to give a comparision to the noise level in an vRS? Is it noisier than a Golf V?

                              In a word: no.

As an owner of both a Golf V (petrol) and a vRS wagon (petrol), the noise levels are about the same.

The vRS has a much stronger note, but that's a good thing!

I can't speak for the diesel, but I don't find cabin noise an issue with the petrol wagon.

I fully agree with dark5hdow's post as above - you can't go wrong with a vRS.

cant comment on the MkV GTi, but my wife has a MkV 103TDi DSG Jetta, and I have a 09 vRS 125TDi DSG Occy Wags.
The 125TDi is quieter that the 103TDi from outside the car, but inside engine noise dampening is very similar.

My tyres are scolloped (prev owner neglected them) so mine gets the road and tyre noise, but hey any car with buggered tyres is gunna sound the same.

I am certain as soon as new tyres go on the vRS (before end of financial), they will be virtually the same noise wise.
