  • VW to sponsor Sydney Swans

Ha ha ha, Skoda announce they are pouring all the marketing paso's into a club that in real terms won't even exist for another 12 months and five minutes later VGA announce they are now the official sponsor/partner for the Sydney swans.

Nothing like a marketing pissing contest to show who's boss hey!!

I don't see how either will lose. VW has a higher profile and bigger budgets and they would have needed it to support the Swans. Skoda are still not well known and now a lot of people know them even though the team won't play yet.

VAG/VW/Skoda all will be visible, it doesn't matter whether the teams are crap.

Depends on how much they paid for the privilege.

Sponsorship on their shorts? Who pays attention to the shorts sponsor? At least Skoda's logo sticks out like dog's balls everytime you look at a player.

Assuming you forget that VW had their logo on the balls and all AFL games for a number of years.

I think they are both wasting money, your average football bogan fan is still going to drive his Falcodore, no matter who sponsors what.

They are sponsoring AFL not NRL and whilst what you say might be correct for NRL (I have no idea whether it is or not) it certainly isn't true for AFL and probably says more about your biases than it does about supporters.

Swans - VW - Eastern Suburbs - Comfortable

Giants - Skoda - Western Suburbs - Aspirational

                  Got the market cornered!

My wife did remind me that she pays a bit of attention to the shorts And there's about a million nuff nuffs in VIC that'd agree (in between talking about how cute their cat looks dressed in their team colours)

I have no affection for AFL, quite why we get saturation coverage for a domestic competition baffles me. The money ploughed into AFL could be better spent supporting teams that play internationally. Personally, I would prefer it if VWA would offer sponsorship to our netballers and hockey players, these are sports in which we dominate. To the best of my knowledge, no hockey players nor netballers have ever been involved in drunken misbehaviour.

I guess you have never stayed in the same hotel in Paramatta as the Australian Netball team then.

Gawd, I knew someone that played in a national girls team for a sport I will not name. They were a wild, wild bunch. If they had the scrutiny that footballers do....

Here is an example of why the western suburbs matters to lower end luxury brands like VW/Skoda. Aspirationals and huge growth in the middle class (three massive housing estates going up, large suburbs ripe for knock down/rebuild).

Apple users are a perfect example of people with a little bit of cash (or credit) to throw around and they are happy to pay extra for something with perceived social standing.

Not in Paramatta, no, but there was this one time... [lurid tale of shennanigans edited out by the management] ...and now I look like a 60 year old man.
