Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Octavia vRS - DRLs in "Strobe" mode. How?

i've seen a couple of vids (overseas) of the octavia rs, in which the drls are in "strobe" mode - i.e. constantly flashing.
any ideas why, or how this is done?

here is an example - u'll c it from 24 secs onwards

in some shots, the drls r continously on, as per normal operation.

I wouldn't bother it's so illegal in Australia you'd be lucky to get outside your street before you were booked.

i don't plan on using it while driving the streets at all.
      i'm curious - not stupid!

You'd probably just use a flasher can and some resistors exactly as if they were indicators.

Sorry I don't really see a difference? The DRLs pulse a little yes but I think that was exacerbated by the camera...

That's just the frame rate/shutter speed of the camera being at a different frequency ( usually fsater ) to the DRL's, if you like I can pull my camera out and take some footage and get the same effect just to show you??

I've seen it in several other vRS youtube videos. Yeh, camera frequency de-synch I'd suggest as well .....
Mainly because it seems to be an inconsistent "flash" time from second to second

                r u guys serious?!?! - camera angle/freq/shutterspeed/desync!!!
                wtf!??!?

here is another video link - one vrs chasing another vrs.
watch the entire video and tell me if the camera is playing tricks on just the blue vrs!!!! i guess the camera only likes playing funny buggers with blue & silver (previous vid i linked) vrs!!
oh no wait....the police car is silver too!! there goes that theory.

as i said before, i'm curious, not stupid!!

Looks like its strobing to me. Seems to me software should make it pretty easy to strobe LEDs, just whether or not it has been programmed to do it... Someone with a VAGCOM might be able to find the setting.

If not a setting in the software, it might be a fitted strobe kit of some kind.

                  eg...

When i had my R80 BMW you could buy an aftermarket black box as a DRL add-on. It would alternate the voltage to the headlight between 6v-8v for a strobe effect. The best bit was it stopped the battery from going flat if you commuted around town a lot (alternator was direct drive off the crankshaft)

i believe its software, as i've seen it on different vrs in different countries.
could b that it can only b done via vagcom or vcds coding?

....or maybe its like a cheatcode/secret for an xbox/ps3, where u have to press a sequence of buttons to activate the drls in strobe mode!!! bhahahahaha!!
i wouldn't know where to start with all those buttons on the steering wheel, stalks & dash!!

                          BAHAHAHA... Are you serious?

LED's constantly flash, but much faster than the human eye can process. The flickering you see is the camera refresh rate. Film is usually shot at 24 frames per second, so naturally you will see the occurrence of the LED blink rate at some point on film. Its kind of the same effect when a CRT Monitor or TV is filmed on camera, they also flash due to the refresh rate being slower than the frame per second rate they are being filmed.

oh boy, here we go again.......

did u not watch the 2nd vid (police chase) in its ENTIRITY?
did u not c the part where BOTH cars r in the shot, yet the blue vrs is "strobing/flashing/pulsing" while the police vrs was "constant/continous"??!
did u not c the above a NUMBER of times at various different points throughout the vid?!?
did u not notice throughout the ENTIRE vid, the blue vrs was in strobe mode while the police vrs was not?!?

unless the actual LEDs fitted on the DRL modules for both cars were different, i.e the LED flash rate on the drl for blue vrs was different (much slower) to that of the drl on police vrs, then MAYBE, slight possible chance, could, by a LONG SHOT, explain the camera frame rate theory, and hence the flicker.
                            but i highly doubt that.

i know all about LEDs, frame rates etc etc. i used to b an electronics nerd & LEDs were my fav item!!
i'm 100% sure that this is not the case here.

It is easy to make them flash, they most likely used commercially available flasher (Narva or similar) that emergency vehicles are using. I don't believe that you can make them flash using VCDS. This debate is getting nowhere.
