Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Car Guide Bronze: What happend to the COTY Gold?

How did the Polo beat the Superb in the CarGuide COTY competition? And a Kia with the Silver? I looked at that car and the Superb is heaps better!!

Still better than Drive.com who couldn't even nominate the Superb but could the commonwhore. Two judges refused to even vote in this category because they felt the commonwhore didn't even deserve to be in the category

The Polo is a seriously excellent car, don't forget that. The Sportage however...

      Don't bag the Sportage.
Everybody raves about the suspension and it was done in Melbourne by my neighbours son who also lives about 500m away so it must be good.

I wasn't saying it's bad, especially with how far Kia has come in recent years, but better than the Superb? Certainly not the Polo however .

Depends what they take into consideration for the award. I only pay attention to wheels and motor mag awards, because they'll at least explain in depth why they chose their winners (agree or disagree). The cynic in me wonders how much the mainstream news media takes into account the Ad spend of the cars they are reviewing.

From the Drive awards "There was also extensive discussion about the decision not to include Skoda's slow-selling but excellent Superb wagon in the DCOTY judging process. In the end, the car's tiny sales worked against it, as did the base model's 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine in a class traditionally populated by V6s."

Interesting, given other comments that the class (large car) is in for a shakeup next year with the new 1.8 and 2l Passats

It's also idiotic given the slow death of large cars. Small petrol engines with turbos/superchargers and turbo diesels are going to breathe life back into the large family car market. And then they give it to a 2.5 litre Maxima anyway!

"Yeah, we don't like small engine cars in this class but mr. 2.5ltr here you go!" When will these idiots understand you don't need a 3.6 to power a car!
Sales figures shouldn't even be considered in the equation when you are talking about the best car. The commonwhore was obviously in there for sales reasons yet the judges thought it was *****... go figure!

I do like the Polo and always have but IMO the Superb is in another again.

What I have learnt through many years of watching COTY from wheels.. Cars guide, Motor Magazine, NRMA etc.. is that they always go for cars that are already popular or high selling, or the most expensive....
The reality is that although we love our Skoda's and have learnt that they are wonderful machines, with strong engineering cred, and unique looks, but nearly every single article about Skoda in Australia Harps back to the 70's as a reference.. and that it was so bad in the past and so just like a VW now.
Seriously, yes its VAG.. but its Very Skoda, and every Skoda is a different packaging of VAG group parts in a unique and functional form.

I don't care about a single COTY reports in Australia as they have never really been accurate with the general market sentiment.

                    Let's see;

                    1982 - JB Camira
                    1985 - Mitsubishi Magna

To name just two years. I'd rather drive a good car than a COTY winner thank you very much.

There is far too much fanboy teeth gnashing around here at times. You guys made rational decisions be adults and live in the knowledge that you don't need other people to tell you what car to buy and go out and enjoy your cars.

IIRC, Leyland Marina & Chrysler Centura won when I was running around in shorts. Neither were ever a good car no matter what criteria you looked at. A few other abortions such as P76 (great car, crap build quality) were also "Cars of the Year". Lets face it, few of these journalists put there money where there mouth is & opt for long term ownership.

I know I have a great car, anyone that's taken the time to drive it is impressed. Of the ~27 cars I've owned & the other ~14 that the wife has had, it's up there in the top 5 (and I'm sure the other 4 wouldn't be as good as their memory if I revisited them)
