  • Still makes me smile!

It's been a while since I have posted, so I thought it was time to give an update.....I have had my vRS Wagon for almost one year now and it has met all of expectations and exceeded some. She has 20000km on the clock.

Last weekend I took my wife up to Mt Tamborine for the weekend and I finally had a chance to give it some curry on some of Australia's best roads. The engine is magic and very dynamic as I was working it through 2nd, 3rd and 4th. It sounds a treat when 6000rpm and pulls like a train from down low for a little 2L. It is very sharp, concise and predictable on turn in and exit (does suffer a bit of torque steer if your being too ambitious though) while still being comfortable. And the fuel economy is brilliant to match.

I have moved couches, washing machines and regularly tow my go-kart. I have had my bike on the roof racks and even a ladder. This car is so damn practical

And most important.......my wife likes driving it too. It is a sedate family car when she is behind the wheel and it turns into a monster in family disguise when I get into it

My ONLY complaint is the road noise as the tyres are wearing. I am considering adding sound insulation as it bugs me when the radio is off. But, for a touch over $40k, you couldn't find anything to match this car.

So after 1 year, I give it 9/10

        Couldn't agree more!!

I added sound insulation to the rear (cargo area) of my RS wagon when I picked it up, I have a whole roll leftover, I bought two rolls but only needed one... I'm happy to sell it to you and post it up, I paid about $55 for the roll (about 4 metres worth I think) inc postage, let me know if you want it I'll discount it to offload it!!

Can you show us some photos of what you did?

I'm in Sydney & if tunes isn't interested, I'd be happy to buy your leftovers & come & pick them up to do my car.

I didn't actually think to take any photos (would be a pain in the butt to do now, I'd have to remove the trim again, sorry).

What I did was take off/peel back the trim material (carefully) from the boot floor and walls, cut the insulation material into pieces to fit and then used a strong Selleys glue to adhere it to the metal... doesn't have to be a precise or pretty job because it gets covered again by the trim... seeing as how I did this first thing when I picked the car up, I can't really say how effective it is at reducing road noise, but I can't say that road noise is an issue for me.... if you did the job then you'd be able to make a good before/after comparison.

Happy to offload it to you for a song, the roll is just sitting around still in plastic.

did it make a good deal of difference and can you give me details of where you bought the stuff from initially?

              Thanks

PS I couldn't agree more with Tunes' assessment. I am on my second RS wagon and have persuaded 3 UK based mates to purchase too. Fabulous cars and so ideal for the family man who still likes to feel a car in the corners. The SUV obsession is one I can't fathom! The RS is more practical, faster and handles better (oh and more economical) than any similarly priced SUV.

Absolutely Brycem, this fascination with SUVs (compact or large) is ridiculous, there's no safety advantage (other than perceived) and there are weight and thus fuel consumption penalties for carrying around a larger mass... cargo areas are no bigger unless you step up to the full size behemoths like landcruiser and patrol... the fascination just doesn't make any sense! More a case of 'everyone else is buying one, I'd better have one as well'

better visibility?? That is bull too. You may be able to see over the car in front but what are you going to do with the knowledge monster truck over it?

Can't say, because I put the insulation in on the day I picked up the car, coz I'd read about the fact that there were 'road noise' issues on the Octavia wagons owing to Skoda's lack of sound insulation... so I never had a chance to get used to the standard car's road noise properties.

I bought the insulation off an e-bay seller in Victoria.

I have approx 20,000 km on mine now after 5 months and the thrumming sound from what I think is the rear tyres is getting ridiculous.
At the 15,000 km service the service dept said no to rotating the tyres because of feathering on the rears, they said I'd complain about noise if they put them on the front. I don't think I've ever had a car with so much tyre/road noise, especially with such low km and moderate wear on the tyres.
