My Skoda has done 34,000kms, K1W1 and it will need tyres by 35,000. I do exploit the performance and handling of the vRS at times (after all, why buy it if you don't use it?) so I am happy with this wear rate on the front of a FWD. The rears have plenty in them yet.
I will be putting a tyre of similar performance on the car and of course the same load and speed rating. So that rules out much cheaper tyres. From the first car I bought, I realised that good quality tyres can make a real difference to the handling of a car.
I really enjoy the way the car handles and steers, after driving more mundane cars for a while, so I guess I have to put up with the cost!

I replaced the tyres on my RS with Falkens-not sure of the model but will check later. They are rubbish. They felt good for the first few thousand km but after that I couldn't get the power down. Handling isn't too bad. but the wheelspin is a real problem-I dont even have to take off hard to spin them. The original tyres (Michelin Pilot Sports 2) were brilliant-but the best I could get them for was $550 each at the time.
I wouldn't go for a different size simply because my understanding is if the size fitted to the car does't match the sizes on the tyre placard (inside the fuel filler door) then they aren't legal. Ditto both the speed rating and the load rating. My Skoda only calls for a W speed rating though? The Falkens are W, the Michelins were Y.

Hi All,
Drew newbie to the forum here.
17000kms on my 09 vRS wagon. picked it up second hand recently, not looking forward to replaceing tyres on it. I know I'll have to do it within the next 12 months. rear tyres are badly scolloped on the inside. leading edge of tread block high, trailing edge low. a bit too buggered to put on the front me thinks!!! Prev owner never rotated tyres and tyre pressures were very low when i got it.
They're Dunlop SP Sport Maxx on it now, i'd be interested to hear comments from people who have driven on these and are able to compare them to the Michellin Pilot Sports or Conti Contact Sports.
Also, the missus is due for tyres on her Jetta very soon too. Currently has the Michellin energy 205/55/16s on it. Tempted to keep with those. Anyone have any other recommendations for 16"s?

instead of 225/40-18, can we fit 235/40-18?

there is only a 1.3% difference between the two.
but there is a huge difference in price - as in half (or more) the price of the 225s. the 235s r a more common size here.

hence a 7" rim can't be narrow for one, but not the other.

Bob Jane's site might be worth a look. Has a tool to tell if a tyre will fit your car or not.
This might cause some conjecture, but I had some Maxxis MA-V1's on my Fiesta Zetec (also a strange sized wheel for a small car). I bought them because Wheels or Motor did tyre testing and the Maxxis' always come 2nd or third and were always best value for money. Not only were they reasonably priced, but they were just as good, if not better than what they replaced. I got about 30000k's of mixed driving out of them without a rotation (I know, I'm a bad man for not managing my tyre wear). The only thing I noticed were they were slightly noisier than what they replaced (it wasn't the most refined car anyway).
