wat sorta prices we looking at to get 4 tyres in?
Jax charge $7.50 a tyre (I'm told, haven't checked) but the average is $10-$15, $20 and you are being bent over. $7.50 sounds excessively cheap to me as the disposal fee is about $2 a tyre. Anyway, budget on $60 for the 4 and you'll be pretty right

Roughly what's the price for shipping?
I'd allow for an alignment as well as fitting.

last time I looked, ~USD180 for 2; ~USD280 for 4. Gone up a fraction I believe but AUD has strengthened too.

You're right. The $7.50 does sound suspiciously cheap.

I just had 2 done on the weekend, strip / fit / balance for $15 each, with a receipt.

But I just took the tyres / wheels in. If you are taking your car in, and taking up time on the hoist, as well as having to have the wheels removed from your car you should expect to pay a bit more. Its not a "five minute" job.

Last 3 tyres I have had changed, I was not charged a separate disposal fee. I think Bob Jane does that though. Guess he has to keep his (ex)wife in those pearls she collects.

Like most things, you either pay seperate or it's incorporated in the price. If you are buying tyres, it will be incorporated because nobody likes a string of extra charges (look how much we all love "workshop supplies" when we get our service done). Trust me, it costs a bloody fortune to get rid of tyres if you are in the Sydney Metro - especially since retreads seem to have fallen in popularity.

R+R is normally the same price whether loose or up on the hoist - too confusing for the customers otherwise.

Well, I guess since I don't live in the Sydney Metro area I am lucky. My local guy has let me just chuck old tyres in his dumpster at no cost to me, but that's a working relationship I guess. He laughed the first time I asked them if they had a tyre disposal fee.

I'm guessing that places that have a one price fits all occasions approach will be more expensive than places that can be a little flexible in their pricing, as they would always have to allow for the most time consuming scenario.

Some customers are easily confused I guess....

so you're looking at about AU360 or 90 a corner before pricing any tyres?
Is the saving and effort worth it? It may be for higher end stuff but then you may end paying duties and taxes.

In some cases it is, in others not. It was worth it for my mate to bring in his PS2s for his 3 series as a front pair & a rear pair 6 weeks apart. It was less than 1000 a pair so no duty or taxes.

There have been a few guys at Golf MKV that have bought wheels & even with the duty, it was worth it. Another mate brought in 2 sets of OZ Ultralegerra for his R32 and he saved $500 per set on the Australian price.

I guess it depends on whether you are comfortable buying from O/S and taking your chances with warranty & no backup & what you consider to be a worthwhile saving.

                    • Just had a very depressing trip to my tyre dealer - the front tyres are already gone after only 15600k's.

Haven't rotated them which was half the issue, wheel alignment seems to be the other issue. Back tyres are still perfect!

$519 per tyre for new Dunlop SP SportMaxx

                      • i've got an 09 vRS 125TDi DSG.

prob with mine is the backs are buggered.
Heaps of tread left but their scolloped.
put them on the front now after 22000kms, rough and noisy ride with scolloped tyres up front, but heaps of tread on them so im gunna hammer them for another 8000kms then put some new ones on before end of financial year.
even though my cars 95% work use, i wont be popping $500 a tyre.
I may go for a 235/40/18 instead which will increase rolling diameter marginally but choice of tyre and pricing should be cheaper due to it being a more common size.

                          Jesus christ!
Definitely have a look at tirerack if you need high end / performance tyres.

If a reasonable quality tyre is okay, definitely have a look into kumho's.
                          I haven't had a problem with mine.

                          • Those Dunlops are the problem more than anything, lots of people find they suck with tyre wear. I've got the Michelin PE2s and they are perfect after 30,000kms so far, tonnes of tread left and have been a grippy tyre. I have just had the first wheel balance and alignment at 2yrs/30k since new as well.

They sadly don't exist anymore though, but have been replaced by the PS3s which I have put on my 6 for $200/tyre, in the same size for the RS they are $440......mainly as they are just getting that size in this month.

My tyre dealer had them about 6 weeks ago. I wanted SWMBO to put them on the Audi ($415 each I was quoted) but she's always been a Bridgestone fan so she ended up with RE050's at $496.00 each. I'll be going the PS3 route when needed my guy gave them a good wrap and he's never been wrong yet.

                              • My brain was a bit out of date, it was late Oct when they were coming. We scored a decent camera from Michelin to boot that I sold for $150 so not bad. I'm happy to go the PS3s for the Skoda, they have been good on the 6 in their short life there so far.
