Yes definitley made sure of that the Tiguan has a 100kg towball weight

It's unfortunite that the Scout, a AWD wagon, has such a low spec although it can tow 1600kg were a towball weight of approx 10% of trailer weight is considered the desired ratio

I think the VAG engineers should look at this especial for such a vehicle

At least its still in the 'family'
Just out of interest, how were you measuring the tow ball weight? I just bought a new trailer and it is under 750kg, single axle, but I haven't a clue what the tow ball weight is.

Also, is it me being stupid, and this would only apply to a single axle trailer, but if the tow ball weight of the trailer was too high, couldn't you raise the height of the tow ball a little, hence tilting the trailer a fraction and thus shifting the weight off the draw arm?

My mate has a Diesel Passat and tows a huge 4 kart single axle trailer with it. He uses those de-loading carrier arms that reduce the tow ball weight significantly. I believe to under 75kg. I guess they are a good option also.

I think it is much more that the engineers are very conservative... (Passat is 85kg)

Look at the required load rating on the tyres for our cars...

Just had a set of old bathroom scales and put them under the jocky wheel.
If your new trailer is just a standard box trailer you shouldn't have a problem but will depend on how you load it and with what. If your just getting a load of soil oe sand which can be quite heavy a short tow over the 75kg shouldn't be a problem

Unfortunitley the towball weight on my boat trailer is 95-100 kg and by tilting the trailer back wouldn't make that much of a difference and being a 20' yacht which overhangs the trailer a fair bit would also create clearence problems at the rear

I did consider a weight distribution hitch (WDH) however couldn't find any reliable source that said it would be okay to use on the Scout as I know some other vehicles that using a WDH is definitley not recommended

Although I don't believe that a higher weight for short distances would be a problem (my opinion only) my intention is that I tow the boat some distance Melb - G'town or Melb-Sydney etc and towing a trailer that exceeds the vehicle specifications may create legal & insurance issues and I don't want these issues when towing a boat that actually worth more than the vehicle
