infact i quite prefer D(auto) over Sports or Manual modes. The take offs r good. the engine braking is helpful, making it a clean & smooth stop.
sports mode i never use cause its too much screaming.
manual mode i use with many roundabouts or twisty roads
I'm jealous then. I guess mine is just 'different' to some. I do completely ignore S mode because it thinks that 6000rpm in first is good.

But mine exhibits none of the goodness you have. My take up can feel like a weak clutch and if you tip a touch too much throttle into it, it feels like you've been hit from behind. The engine braking is one thing that really annoys me - I honed the art of hell-and-toe over the years in all my manual cars, and it don't feel that the engine braking gives me a smooth slow down.

Maybe I will get them to look at its when first service comes around, but IMHO, I find the gearbox somewhat dissapointing. But I have questioned in my own head if I simply miss 3 pedals, full stop.

      Sorry to hear that candy_wagon...

Have you tried driving another RS of the same spec, perhaps at a dealer or one of us from the forum, and compared how they feel?
I would be curious to see what the differences are, and therefore how you can approach correcting it.

      Just a thought.

I cant fault my DSG after 3,500 kms. I have driven many GTI's and R's, as well as Scirocco R's, and I dont find mine any different.

If I lived closer, I would be happy for you to test mine...

Well I finally have my new toy and so far I'm very impressed indeed. Gave it a little bootful today (just a little one as I'm still running her in), but I have to say the front wheel drive steering torque under load took me a little by surprise. As I'm used to the Haldex system on the Tiggy, now having all the power to the front wheel drive is a little hard to get used too!!!

How do you vRS drivers who've tuned their TSI's handle this steering torque under full load?

I don't have the TSI, but my TDI is rated at 350Nm... I get absolutely zero torque steer. Its fantastic!!

Another thing I've found I do if getting off the line quickly is short-shift first (full throttle, 3k rpm shift) then straight into second and up to 4.5k.
Again, a diesel thing... But a lot less wheel spinning and TC flashing.
          I love torque.

            I agree donweather!!!
I too came from a tiguan, and the difference in 'torquesteer' is quite pronounced!! I find it one of the few things that detracts from a fast take off from the line. I always chirp the front wheels if I take off quickly, and often lose grip for a second.

Hmmmm. Good old axle tramp hey! I feel your pain and am strongly considering a torque arm insert to counter that and give better traction off the line.

I'd like to improve 6th gear. The MFD is saying change to 6th at 65km/hr......and then at 110km/hr, the car is revving at 2500rpm or thereabouts. Give us a real 6th gear that is essentially made for what it is designed for....highway cruising at 110km/hr at less than 2000 rpm, not cruising the suburban streets in 6th gear at 65km/hr!!!

Your MFD tells you to change gears??

I have the TDI, but even still I find myself cruising down the highway in 5th @ 100km/h. (Green P's)
5th gear at 100km/h is 2,250rpm. I've found that 2,250rpm is the best combination of power/economy... 4L/100km can't be wrong!!
5L/100km average from my house to Sydney CBD, with powering around hitting boost and generally driving like a p-plater at either end.
                      100.2KM trip, one way.

                      • If you've got a manual octavia it'll tell you on the MFD if you need to either change up or down a gear. I thought it was nifty when I test drove a manual. Ended up getting a DSG.
One thing I'd like is folding mirrors and mirrors that dip when reversing. I figured it'd be standard on a 50k car but no

Yep, and it's telling me to be in 6th at 65km/hr!!!!

If your TDI is in 5th at 100km/hr and only doing 2,250rpm then it must have a different gear ratio to the RS TSI, cause at 110km/hr in 6th I'm easily at 2,500rpm+ which to me is ridiculous. It should be no more than 2000rpm, preferably 1800rpm or thereabouts at 100km/hr in 6th, after all, that's what 6th gear is designed for. Not cruising the streets at 65km/hr!!!!

The only car I've seen that does that is the 2012 Kia Rio which I test drove just after it came out. Yes, I still like my Kia's.

I believe its standard on the vRS with leather (and subsequently with electric seats with memory function) - I know the mirror dip option is in VCDS, but enabling it on my Alcantara-trim does absolutely nothing.

My TDI starts making power at 1,750rpm and drops off at 4,000, so I have less of a rev range to work with than you do, but I have much MUCH more low-down torque.
At the end of the day, both engines are STILL 2ltrs and will have gearing and characteristics to match... They're not the big Holden 6 with 1,500rpm 100km/h cruising! (emphasis on "big")

My 1.4ltr 5spd manual Rio did 3.4-3.6k rpm in 5th at 110. Its been awhile, so I don't remember exact figures.

With the TSI you'll want 2,500rpm @ 110km/h. Thats probably closest to the engines load vs economy figure.
As I said before, the TDI's perfect number is 2,250rpm - calculated via load % displayed by OBD-II scanner.
If you've got an Android phone/tablet, grab a copy of Torque Pro from the Play Store, and a bluetooth ELM327 OBD-II scanner off eBay for around $15 and have a go yourself.

Interesting piece of info - at 40^C on a sydney day, in traffic, the air intake temp of the 125TDI can go anywhere between 45-55^C.

I agree, especially since the fuel consumption is so much heavier once you exceed 2000rpm. If I cruise at <2000rpm I average ~5.6L/100km but at 110kmh I average ~6.9L/100km.

edit: Mysticality, the TSI petrol engines are well on-boost at 2000rpm. They are a bit under-geared unless you like to put them in 6th at 70kmh & leave it there all the way through to licence losing speeds.

Your place to the CBD is downhill most of the way. I use about 1L/100km less going west to east than vice-versa.
