Engine Fault Workshop - warning light

So last night driving home on the m1 freeway about 5 kms from home when i hear a beep noise which i'd never heard before. Something flashed up on the MFD but i didn't have enough time to see what it was. I thought it might be the seatbelt warning so i unplugged and plugged in again.
Few minutes later i hear the noise again and this time i had the chance to read the warning and it read "Engine Fault Workshop"
Nothing on the dash board had lit up, but it just kept beeping at me every 30 seconds or so with the warning coming up. The performance of the car was still fine. No issues.

When i got home i called Skoda roadside assist and told them what had happened. They advised me to jump out of the car and to lock and unlock the car 3 times and then to jump back in and start it to see if it had fixed the issue. It didn't. But this time the Engine light flashed up on the dash in orange. I told the operator this and she advised that it's not something that Road side can assist with and told me to take it to Skoda for them to have a look at it. I asked if it would be safe to drive even though the warning light was on. She said "as long as it stays orange and doesn't turn Red, you'll be ok"

Called Richmond Skoda this morning and told them i was coming in. They said that they were fully booked, but to come in anyway.
Drove in and they took my car straight away to have a look at it.
Spoke to George who said he'd never heard of the issue. After about 20 mins they told me that it was a simple glitch and that they reset the computer and it should be fine.

Drove out happy, but after 5 mins the light came on and the Beeping started.
Called them back and i'm booked in for next Monday for them to have a proper look at it.

Good thing the car in still under warranty, but not happy that i'm having issues only 6 months into owing the car.

I'll let you guys know how i go.

You can buy a VAG code reader on ebay for about $30 , then you ll know what the problem is yourself, rather than relying on the dealer.

Does the manual cover what it means? On my Subaru an engine shaped light came on, freaking me out, but the manual explicitly stated that it was an emission control warning. I took it to the dealer, who reset the system....

My 5th Gen Golf GTI does the same thing now and again.

Basically it is as Inego suggested and is an Emission Control Warning light (if it is orange). The Orange light could mean other things as well but it usually is an emission warning.

My only suggestion is that you may have got a bad/less then perfect tank of fuel which is causing this.

My transporter (2.5 TDI) recently had the "Exhaust Warning Lamp" constantly lit (yellow picture of an engine). Turned out to be a faulty exhaust pressure sensor, once that was replaced normal service was resumed.

Hope you get yours fixed promptly ( I had to wait 10 days to get mine booked in to be fixed).

Latest update:

Skoda had my car for 2 days. They first advised me that the ignition sensor or switch was causing the fault. so they replaced that.

Then they found out that that wasn't the issue. The issue is the Throttle body . They've ordered me a new one and it should be in by the end of the week

I had the same light come on in mine one evening after a small traffic light dice with a riceburner of some sort. I thought I'd done some nasty damage although it was running fine. I went to the handbook to find it was for "control system for exhaust" and I should have it looked at by a Skoda workshop as soon as possible. In the meantime it was safe to drive gently. I was a little peeved as to do that I have to have a half day off work, but the next morning I booked it in at Bayford for the following day (2 days after it came on). He seemed surprised on the phone that it was a petrol model-apparently it's happened with the diesels a bit but they generally go off after a while. Mine came on the night before and was on the whole next day. Anyway, the following day I got in the car and was 1/2 way to work when I realised the light was off. I called Bayford who said it's probably a loose wire or something and they'll have a look next service.
That was 3 weeks ago and it's stayed off.

Did you ask them what errors are being detected on VAG COM? Sometimes you can look up forums for most common problems associated with particular engine error codes. Usually these problems are notoriously hard to troubleshoot. Did you notice anything funny before (higher consumtion, jerky engine)?

I'm still waiting for them to give me a detailed report on the issue.
I'm booked in Monday for them to replaced the throttle body and hopefully that will fix it.

I didn't notice anything different at all before it happened. I did fell that the DSG box was a little bit funny. It tends to shudder a bit when changing from gear 2-3 if i'm at a low speed. Fuel consumtion was fine.
